Great Content - it could have had bigger brighter pictures November 16, 2009 M. Smithley I bought this book for my seven year old grandson. I know that it is normally used for homeschooling but I just bought it to read to him. When we read together I sometimes like the content to be educational. We like the stories and he learns something too. I wish the pictures were bigger and brighter, but other than that this is a great educational tool, because your child will enjoy the way history is explained in this book. If they go to public school they will probably recall the stories when they study it in school.
This is it? October 12, 2009 A. Jorgensen (texas) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book came highly recommended by some homeschool families that I know. I couldn't imagine basing an entire curriculum off of this book, even for elementary ages. I really struggle with the way that Bauer treats religion in the book, not just the Judeo-Christian stories, but also the religions of the other civilizations.
I feel that this book belongs in 'Historical Fiction' rather being used as a primary text book. Other reviewers have pointed out that she has admitted to moving dates around and changing historical evidence to suit her needs, she also creates conversations to tell the stories, which are considered tools of 'historical fiction', not of textbook writing.
I can't fully express how disappointed I am in this book, and how much more disappointed I am in its success.
I decided to take my kids to the library, check out books about the civilizations we were studying, and find some activity books or activities online to do with them. They'll get exposed to much better writing and much better information.
A good idea not so well executed September 20, 2009 Kiwi Critic (South Dakota, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As another reviewer noted "Many things are presented as facts that are actually storytelling". Among other noted inaccuracies, the author offers up bible stories as "history". Other readers might find this acceptable but I most certainly do not. This book is going in the paper recycling bin.
Great book for all ages September 18, 2009 D. Tucker (North Carolina) I bought this book for my 14 year old daughter. I was a little bit concerned that it might be to elementary for her, but I was pleasantly surprised. While it is written in a very clear, easy-to-understand way, it is also very thorough. Since most of the activities in the corresponding activity book are geared more for younger kids, I've had to supplement and create activities that are more appropriate for a 9th grader. Overall, I would highly recommend this book!
christian mythology September 17, 2009 L. Aroutiounian (New York, NY) 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
Never buy these books. There is no history in these series. The author's condescending tone to the young readers is inappropriate. But that would be ok if at least Bauer had some knowledge of history. She mixes up certain historical facts with christian bible stories. The writing style is incoherent. First she describes supposedly a Nomad girl, so that children can imagine the prehistoric times, then Bauer abruptly moves into a Bible story, without any warning. What the hell? So, after all, it becomes full of Christian Mythology. What a waste. I bought 4 books before reading the reviews. I cant even offer them as gifts I am so ashamed of having these dumb books..
