A MUST for driving to Alaska! February 21, 2009 Judith Dexter (Warsaw, MO) If you are planning to drive to Alaska "The Milepost" is an absolute necessity. We were planning an RV trip to Alaska in 2003 so I purchased the book about 4 months before we planned to leave. During those months, I read every word of "The Milepost" that pertained to where we were planning to go. I highlighted things we wanted to stop to see and where gas stations were located along the Alaskan Highway. We planned our entire trip using that book. When we left home, we felt confident that our trip would be lots of fun and very interesting.
We were not disappointed. Because we had "The Milepost" our trip was "the trip of a lifetime." It told almost everything a person would want to know about everything on the Alaskan Highway and in Alaska. We knew where to find every campground, restaurant, gas station, scenic point, historical marker, mountain range, etc. The maps were perfect too.
We are planning another RV trip back to Alaska this summer so I ordered a new Milepost. Things have changed a bit in 6 years but I know our trip will be fantastic again and I credit a lot of that to "The Milepost." It gives you confidence that you'll be able to find whatever you want to do in Alaska and on the Alaskan Highway through Canada. You won't miss a thing. It even gives ferry schedules and prices if you want to take a trip on the ferry to Sitka (as we did) or elsewhere that has no roads into it.
I really can't say enough about "The Milepost." I'm absolutely certain that, without it, our trip would have been very different and not nearly the wonderful trip we had in 2003. We are SO looking forward to going back this summer and "The Milepost" will be right beside me all the way!
Never go to Alaska without it! February 12, 2009 Marcia L. Osborne (Kennewick, WA USA) We've driven to Alaska five times since 1998, and we always purchase a new Milepost in March before we go so that I have time to read and underline the rest areas, campgrounds, restaurants and points of interest that we'd like to see during our trip. Thanks to the information in the Milepost, we've taken quite a few side trips from the Alaska Hwy. that we might not have taken had I not read about them in the Milepost. It's very easy to read and follow, although some routes have to be read backward, which can be challenging. We really enjoy the abundance of pictures.
WOW! January 17, 2009 G. Baker (US) It is not for the faint of heart, but well worth a deep dive!
This did not have high ratings, but some of the descriptions clued me in. As an independant traveler I need details. You do have to really use this book like research tome, but the detail and information is exceptional. If you are planning to drive much, this is great. I got fishing, wildlife view, gas, services, and attraction information in one place. It was like have a local guide.
milepost January 2, 2009 Sally S. Rinehart (ct) A little too detailed for my purposes. Probably a life-saver while driving in Alaska.
Perhaps this book is more useful if you're traveling in the summer January 1, 2009 S. Mraz (Kalispell, MT) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was very helpful when we needed to know where the next pull-out spot would be. But many of the businesses that the book stated were open year round were not open. Because of this we nearly ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere but luckily we had some full gas cans with us. I couldn't go by their mileage markings for the last 100 miles or so before we got to the US border because the book was going off of the inaccurate kilometer markers but the markers had been corrected.
We traveled in mid December and I am assuming that this book was geared towards summer travelers. But it was still worth the price.
