| Customer Reviews: Are you kidding me? September 4, 2009 S. dhamrhat (PA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book and opened it up when I got home... To my shock, I found at least 3 errors just browsing through random pages.
Things like: 'What is the area of triangle ABC below?' and the triangle is labelled 'HIJ' or something to that effect...
This book was seriously not even proof read -it is that bad. [...]... What a waste!
Do yourself a favor and do NOT get this book. Or, at the least, go to a book store and look through it to verify how horrendous the mistakes are... Clearly this book wasn't proof read. Just because the economy is not doing well doesn't mean customers deserve a crap product.
Too many mistakes August 17, 2009 Elizabeth M. Hopple (Alabama) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree with the other two reviews. The review is far too basic to help you gain a good score on the GMAT. However, if you were to pair it with another GMAT book, it might be helped.
I also found a lot of mistakes in the book. I found 11 mistakes and I'm sure there are more that I missed since I didn't start counting typos until about the 6th chapter.
Hope this review helped!
Did some of proof read this? July 22, 2009 deborah song 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am not quite sure where to start with this book. I had high expectation for this book, since it was a KAPLAN.
Since I haven't even looked at math problems for the last 6 years, this book was definitely a quick brush up on those good ol' skills.
I became frustrated half way through the book. There were so many mistakes!!! It was unbelievable! Didn't the publishers proofread at all?
I'll list a couple:
Page 372 Chapter 12 test question # 14
Solve the system of equations:
3x+y=4
2x-8y=-50
it said the answer was suppose to be E) (-1,7). ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
in the explanation the (-50) miraculously changed to -58.

question 17
X^2-9x-20 was factored into (x-4)(x-5)

best one yet.

Geometry test
Question 13.
a right isosceles triangle was given. BUT it was ONLY a triangle, so the corners were not even lettered.
The question reads : Given the following figure, what is the measure of angle CDF. (Uh.... am I suppose to guess???)
So we all know that with one 90 degree angle the other two angle are suppose to be 45 degrees each.
The answer lists
a) 100 degrees
b)85
c) 75
d)65
e) 125
I turned to the explanation, and the answer said
e) Angle CDF is an exterior angle; its ,measure is equal to
the sum of the two other remote interior angles, 110
degrees and 15 degrees. The measure of angle
CDF=110+15=125
Please go to a book store and verify these mistakes have been corrected before you purchase.
Or, if you are not a perfectionist like me and could overlook these mistakes, this would be a good book to keep on the shelf for reference.
Perfect if you need a LOT of help with Math but No Hard questions here June 9, 2009 GMAT Club (USA) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I scored 750 on the GMAT, so probably expected a bit more from this book, but it does what it says - covers GMAT Math basics and does the job effectively without extras. If you have trouble with Math and very rusty - this book is perfect. However, if you have gone through Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook you will be disappointed with question difficulty. I am still giving it 5 stars - here is why:
1. Methodical - starts with very basics of number properties and how to add/multiply large numbers
2. Good coverage of topics and well organized though a bit strange with equations as the last chapter
3. Covers adequately probability and statistics
4. Covers Coordinate geometry in great detail
5. No overlap with other Kaplan GMAT Books
6. Builds confidence with math
A few complaints:
1. Would be great to have some harder questions
2. Will require a different book to get past the 600, but with a solid base, it won't be hard
3. No formula review sheet or some kind of a glossary/index - this would really be helpful rather than flipping pages back and forth
Here is what this book is NOT and should not be expected from it:
* All questions in the book only require a one-step solution - it is designed to give you practice of that one step; not teach you how to crack 700+ level quesitons
* Does not cover word problems (covers arithmetic, geometry, and algebra) - the word problems that it has are mostly interpretation problems, but again, this is to be expected from a book called Foundations
Good luck on your GMAT
