Product Description
Celebrated for her style and substance, Michelle Obama has transformed the role of first lady and become a 21st century icon, attracting attention from all over the world. The qualities so admired in her - intelligence, strength and charisma - radiate through her personal style, which has united accessibility with high-wattage glamour. The clothes, like the woman, feel both familiar and inspirational. Readily mixing high-end labels with more affordable brands, with a focus on craftsmanship and artistry, Mrs. O has elevated the notion of real value and ushered in a new era of "fashion democracy".

Building on the success of Mrs-O.org - the Web site that chronicles Michelle Obama's style - MRS. O: THE FACE OF FASHION DEMOCRACYtakes a closer look at America's modern style icon, featuring more than 120 photographs of the first lady and delving into the back story of her clothes and accessories. It also goes behind the scenes with interviews from her favorite designers, including Isabel Toledo, Jason Wu, Michael Kors, Maria Pinto and Isaac Mizrahi.

Opening with a brief overview of Michelle Obama's early years, the book goes on to provide rarely seen photos from behind-the-scenes on the presidential primary trail through the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the monumental events of election night, the inauguration and early chapters of life in the White House. The final chapter hears the opinions of Mrs. O's adoring fans - giving the last word to the people.

Original photographs of Michelle Obama's most iconic looks, along with commentary from fashion experts, top off this tactile visual feast. Woven together with sketches and illustration inspired by the first lady, the book reveals the story of a new era of American fashion.

This is an interesting book, telling about the life and fashion of Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States. She is a remarkable woman both in her day to day life as well as in her sense of fashion.

When you read Mrs. O, you learn about Michelle Obama from the time she was born until present day. Tomer uses great detail to explain the fashion sense of Mrs. Obama. Details that most people never hear about, like the type of fabric an outfit she wears is made of or how it fits on her body.

Mrs. Obama, or Mrs. O as she is now known, has a unique taste in fashion. She's not a trend follower, she's a trend setter, with a style that is all her own, in both casual and elegant styles.

I enjoyed reading this book and I feel as though I know Mrs. O better. I recommend this book if you like fashion or if you just want to know the first lady a little better. Well done, Ms. Tomer!

I was thrilled when this book arrived, and now I can't put it down! The articles and interviews are eloquently written and thought provoking, while the images seem to jump out at you on the page. What is especially special about this book is the personal feel to it and an overwhelming desire to learn even more about Mrs. O. I've ordered many more for the holidays and am excited to have such a special gift to give!

5 out of 5 stars THE coffee table book of 2009   November 2, 2009

For all you sceptics who think this book is nothing more than glossy photographs, think again. This book has got to be one of the best I have ever come across in a long time and let me tell you why.

It is jam packed with photographs of the first lady not just in her public role but some dating back to her early days. The close ups on her jewellry, brooches, shoes and swatches are amazing. You get to REALLY scrutinise how classy this woman really is. Pages upon pages (it's a big book) of really beautiful pictures and lots of interviews with her favourite designers - Pinto, Mirzahi, Rodrigues, Sorenson, Kors, Ikram as well as all the jewellers. There is a lot to read - it is a book not a hardback magazine.

It also shows how Michelle will go down in history as THE most fashionable first lady ever. She mixes high end with low end, throws on belts and brooches and makes it her own. She recycles her items and makes completely different outfits every time AND her ability to really work colours is truly amazing. I'm out of breath.

More importantly, the first lady and the author shows that you don't need money to look good. Fashion can be classy as well as cheap and affordable. Fashion is not about someone having the ability to wear Valentino gowns or Gucci or Prada. Fashion should be relateable and many women will be able to relate to Michelle Obama and how she makes clothes WORK for her.

The author has done me a great favour, I have ordered another three copies as Christmas presents for my friends. Fantastic piece of work.

I follow [...] the web site that Mary Tomer created to chronicle Michelle Obama's fashion style. When I saw that this idea was turned into a book called Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democray, I knew I had to have a copy myself. I find that Mrs. Obama is a First Lady with intelligence, style, class, strength and charisma. These qualities are reflected in her personal style and choice of clothing that is inspiring. I like that she combines high end designer labels with more affordable brands such as Gap, J Crew, and Liz Claiborne.

Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy includes over 120 beautiful photographs of Michelle Obama and describes the back story related to her clothes and accessories. The photographs are stunning and bold and I enjoyed looking through them and reading about details related to the fashions she chose to wear. You get a true sense of her personal style. There are also interviews with her favorite designers which include Isabel Toledo, Jason Wu, Michael Kors, Maria Pinto and Isaac Mizrahi. The book opens with Michelle Obama's earlier years and even includes rare photos from behind-the-scenes of the presidential primary trail , the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the events of election night, the inauguration and early life in the White House. There are even drawings and opinions at the end of the book from Mrs. O's fans which was fun to read.

This book beautifully captures Mrs. O's style savvy during the Obamas' historic ascent to the White House and months that followed. Every aspect of the book reflects meticulous attention to detail: from cover portrait to befitting title; from Mary Tomer's rich narrative to photographs and design that are art unto themselves. Q&A interviews with designers and other industry professionals are an added bonus, offering amazing insight into the creative process. And what a democratic touch to offer Mrs. O fans an outlet for their own creative expression as included in a closing chapter. "Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy" is a visual feast to keep close at hand and leisurely savor, again and again.
