Product Description From the author of the long-running # 1 bestseller StrengthsFinder 2.0 comes a landmark study of great leaders, teams, and the reasons why people follow. Nearly a decade ago, Gallup unveiled the results of a landmark 30-year research project that ignited a global conversation on the topic of strengths. More than 3 million people have since taken Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment, which forms the core of several books on this topic, including the #1 international bestseller StrengthsFinder 2.0. In recent years, while continuing to learn more about strengths, Gallup scientists have also been examining decades of data on the topic of leadership. They studied more than 1 million work teams, conducted more than 20,000 in-depth interviews with leaders, and even interviewed more than 10,000 followers around the world to ask exactly why they followed the most important leader in their life. In Strengths Based Leadership, #1 New York Times bestselling author Tom Rath and renowned leadership consultant Barry Conchie reveal the results of this research. Based on their discoveries, the book identifies three keys to being a more effective leader: knowing your strengths and investing in others' strengths, getting people with the right strengths on your team, and understanding and meeting the four basic needs of those who look to you for leadership. As you read Strengths Based Leadership, you'll hear firsthand accounts from some of the most successful organizational leaders in recent history, from the founder of Teach For America to the president of The Ritz-Carlton, as they discuss how their unique strengths have driven their success. Filled with novel research and actionable ideas, Strengths Based Leadership will give you a new road map for leading people toward a better future.

Strengths based leadership just about correct November 13, 2009 R. Newton (Llangollen) need to make sure you are not disturbed when you take the test as you cannot retake it.
I would periodically like to retake the test to see whether I change over time but I don't think it will provide enough information for me to buy another book in order to take it again.
I thought the survey was reasonably spot on. 4 out of my 5 strengths I got correct from reading the book and the fifth one it chose for me would have been my number 6th strength.
The report is very positive and one you would be happy to share with anyone.
I am just not sure how it will help me improve or be a better leader but if all of your team members undertake it then you will be able to work together far more effectively.
Discover and play to your natural strengths November 1, 2009 Craig Boke (Alexandria, VA) This is an easy read that talks about not trying to be someone you're not. I'm half-way through it and think it is a good tool to motivate folks and yourself.
Strengths Based Leadership October 15, 2009 Michael J. Hughes (Telluride, Colorado) I use this product with my Introduction to Leadership class. It is an excellent resource and fits exactly what we want in regards to leading with your strengths. This is outstanding for anyone and our kids absolutely love the book and the test that showed their individual stregths and how they can stategically use them.

Strengths Based Leadership: Great Leaders, Teams and Why People Follow
by Tom Rath and Barry Conchie
First, there is nothing wrong with this book. So why do I only rate it with 3 stars? Simply, because while there is one new idea and a decent application of that idea, it really isn't very ground breaking. It is more of a re-tread with a twist added.
The Strengths idea is a GREAT one and the earlier research and the prior books, especially First Break All the Rules by Buckingham (now a persona non grata at Gallup) and the somewhat recent StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath, are very good ones.
Strengths Based Leadership, for me, seems to repeat many of the insights from these books and adds one main twist. In one study Gallup did, surveying what people are looking for in their leaders, they came up with four key ideas. People look to their leaders to (1) build trust, (2) show compassion, (3) provide stability and (4) create hope. What this book does is then take each strength and offer practical ideas for how you can do each of those four things out of each strength.
Hmmm . . .
Is this worth $25.00? I'm not sure. Of course, you get the Unique Code so you can go to the website and take the Strengths Finder test on line.
If you have not used the StrengthsFinder 2.0 already, then go ahead and get this book and use it instead. If you have already done the SF 2.0, I don't think this is worth the money.

One too many trips to the well September 3, 2009 F. Hughes (Irvine, CA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mainly a rehash of the earlier books. Guess someone had another kid to put through college.
