Product Description
The paperback edition of Daniel H. Pink's groundbreaking book, A Whole New Mind.

Described by reviewers as "an audacious and powerful work," "a profound read," "right on the money," and "a miracle," the book reveals the six abilities individuals must master in an outsourced and automated world. Several publications named A Whole New Mind one of the best business books of 2005. It is now being translated into 12 languages -- and will appear across Europe and Asia in 2006.

For this updated and expanded edition, Pink has added dozens of new tools, tips, and exercises to help individuals and organizations sharpen their right-brain capacities. Find out why Thomas L. Friedman, author of the mega-bestseller The World is Flat, calls A Whole New Mind his "favorite business book."

4 out of 5 stars High Concept, High Touch. High Marks!   November 2, 2009

A couple a career coaches at the networking groups I attend suggested this book as required reading and I agree. Information is so ubiquitous this day in age that a person has to distinguish themselves through "high concept, high touch" actions, services and products.

I particularly like the concepts of design and story. It easy to see how these concepts apply, even to the internet itself. For example, we have all seen websites that are "flat": They have a couple of pictures, some bullet lists & short paragraphs, and maybe 3 or 4 linked pages. We place low credibility not only with the site, but with the organization behind it. Contrarily, look at sites like [...] that provides dictionary and thesaurus assistance that is both fun to use and provides INSTANT VISUAL UNDERSTANDING. Similarly, look at how the REAL School Gardens in Fort Worth, Texas tells a story about itself using a stepping stone path rather than bullets or prose. ([...])

Like many others, I think Mr. Pink is on target with his insights on the direction our society is headed.

5 out of 5 stars A Major Shift in Thinking   October 28, 2009

Fifty years ago the advice to young people was to get a good education in one of the professional fields and you would always be able to get a good job, earn a living and support your family.

Fifty years ago, the "society was built on logical, linear, computer like capabilities" - capabilities that were left brain focused.

According to the author Daniel Pink, there has been a major shift in how the world works. The mainstay of the economic engine a few years ago - "knowledge workers" - is being replaced.

Those things that are logical and linear are now being done in Asia. What was once the prestige occupations in the US are now commodity functions and can be done in Asia much cheaper.

The book starts off with a short lesson on the way the brain works. Then the author traces the rise and eventual decline in knowledge workers and the implications.

As we enter the Conceptual Age, we will be more concerned with feelings and experience than with material things. This gives more importance to the right brain directed activities.

He then discusses what he calls the "six essential right brain directed aptitudes: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play and Meaning.

Pink makes a very compelling case that we are moving away from the focus on accumulating more material things to a focus on more meaning in life. If you expect to succeed in this new world, you will need to become more in tune with the High Concept - High Touch way. "Meaning is the new money".

A very important work that looks ahead rather than toward the past and gives us a good sense of where to focus our efforts.

A very thought provoking work.

This is a great conversation-starter for anyone interested in education. My favorite line is that we need to "educate children for their future, not our past." The world is changing and our education system needs to keep up. Get ready to think with this book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Parents with kids of all ages!   October 1, 2009

Just finished Pink's book "A Whole New Mind"! As a parent of 4 kids - 2 in college, 1 in 8th grade, and 1 in 4th grade (yes we finally figured out what causes it;-) - we are VERY intrigued by the seachange that Pink describes is occuring in the workforce and our world culture. I just found out that our local school board is now required to read "A Whole New Mind", a mandate from our newly appointed Superintendant. And so the dialog is beginning at our local grassroots level to embrace the paridigmatic shifts that Pink so elequently articulates in "A Whole New Mind". Thanks Daniel for writing down your keen observations on these 21st century cultural shifts!! Now its time to challenge my own kids' right brains! JY

3 out of 5 stars He's trying really hard   October 1, 2009

I haven't read the entire book yet, but so far, the author seems intent on convincing everyone that he is a right brain thinker by forcing analogies and focusing more on creative fluff than actual content. The first 20 pages people should have learned in a basic psychology class, or even high school physiology. I'm hoping the content sections are better.
