DC Literary Society November 24, 2009 M. Tanner (Hot Springs Village) our SR Citizens' book club selection was one I did not expect to enjoy. It was a "page-turner" for me. It caused us to evaluate our backgrounds and to assess how far we "think" we have come.
Wonderful Story November 24, 2009 Jan (Phoenix AZ) I was raised in the South in the 50's and 60's and was amazed at how well this young author conveyed the relationships, prejudices, and environment of the time.
Worried at first November 24, 2009 Nom de Plume (Orlando, FL United States) I thought, for the first quarter of the book, that this was going to be a book to assuage white guilt. Y,'know, "Look at how racist they were! Thank god I'm not racist like *them*!" But it developed into a more complex novel, with characters who didn't let you off easy. Now, if someone would only write a modern-day version, to get us up to speed on what racism looks like today....
Worth the read November 23, 2009 Deb (Albuquerque, NM United States) This is a terrific story. I didn't want the book to end. I have not felt this way about other books in a very long time. Time is a valuable resource to invest and this was worth the time.
