The DEFINITIVE GIS tutorial/reference guide July 31, 2009 J. P. Washabaugh (Pittsburgh, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used this book to learn the GIS software 4 years ago and found it so useful that I continue to keep it at my desk as a reference book. I agree that it is extremely well written, easy to follow, and contains loads of helpful hints. The tutorials start off basic enough for any novice, but cover the most advanced GIS analysis topics by the end of the book. The book emphasizes both pragmatic data collection and analysis, as well as creating attractive presentable maps. I recently upgraded to ArcMap 9.3 and bought the accompanying tutorial workbook, which has some valuable upgrades of its own. I would strongly recommend this series to anyone interested in learning the ArcMap GIS software (and let's face it, ESRI is the only GIS software developer for all intents and purposes), whether it is for classroom or personal use!
You can get better for free May 1, 2009 A. Luders 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book is very poorly written and nothing but a chore past tutorial 4. This is a required text for a GIS course at my university and other than the trial copy of GIS this book is not worth the purchase.
This manual was obviously written by a programmer and not an instructor, as this book does not attempt to teach as much as it just gives a A, B, C "how to" approach to the very basics. The tutorials do not cover what is required to complete specific minutia of the assignments. If your instructor has the grading sheets provided by ESRI then you will get docked for nick-nack points for not completing tasks that were not asked for or even eluded to in the assignment. Expect to walk away with a 2.0 to a 3.0 even with all tasks completed as asked by the assignments. As one student in my class put it (who happens to be GIS certified and is a geography major): "this book is horribly written and should not be used as a text book in an introductory class, or any class".
This book MAY be a somewhat useful reference, however there are FREE tutorials from ESRI that are equally as useful and plenty of great forums out there with better information than what this book provides. Just Google what you need and don't buy this book.
If this text is required for your class, MAKE SURE you buy the right edition - you might even need to buy the one your bookstore sells. Two people in my class bought this book online through other retailers and got the wrong edition of the book, which had the wrong data on the CD. Consequently they could not complete the homework and couldn't return the book, so they basically flushed their money.
Classrooms and individual study programs will find it invaluable March 15, 2009 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Demands for effective GIS training are growing and this tutorial workbook has been designed for a wide audience of users, is offered in an easy step-by-step format, and can be adapted to a range of training purposes, from classroom use to graduate students seeking individual study. Scripted exercises begin with the easier step-by-step directions then move to exercises emphasizing performing GIS tasks without the step-by-step instruction. Classrooms and individual study programs will find it invaluable.
Well Written January 30, 2009 B. Smith (Colorado) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is probably one of the most best written software documents I've encountered. Descriptions of procedures are written in painful clear detail. Definitely well worth it for the new Arc View user.
