Product Description

Do you love teaching but feel exhausted from the energy you expend cajoling, disciplining, and directing students on a daily basis? If so, you'll want to meet “The Sisters”, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. Based on literacy learning and motivation research, they created a structure called The Daily Five which has been practiced and refined in their own classrooms for ten years, and shared with thousands of teachers throughout the United States. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work, and listening to reading) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals.

This book not only explains the philosophy behind the structure, but shows you how to carefully and systematically train your students to participate in each of the five components.

Explicit modeling practice, reflecting and refining take place during the launching phase, preparing the foundation for a year of meaningful content instruction tailored to meet the needs of each child.

The Daily Five is more than a management system or a curriculum framework; it is a structure that will help students develop the habits that lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teachers   October 16, 2009
N.Teach (PA)
This book is great, especially for teachers. Children learn how to pick books on their appropriate level. Using these ideas from the book, children begin to develop a love for reading!

This book totally revamped my reading/LA instruction. No more worksheets! It is better instruction with less planning/prep.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Follow, Great Advice!   September 14, 2009

The sisters come up with some of the best teaching strategies I have heard of to this day. I have fully integrated this into my daily routine, and the students love it. More and more my students have become readers (in a school that isn't known for good reading scores), and I can truly see them becoming better readers right before my eyes. With the design of this system, I have time to go and confer with students that need more one-on-one time than others. Teaching first grade is a crucial time for young readers, and this approach to reading time has given me an excellent strategy to tackle it with ease. The kids love it, I love it, and I can truly tell it is helping all of them!

5 out of 5 stars The best thing to happen for teachers   August 31, 2009

I cannot speak highly enough about The Daily Five. I read the book before the start of the 08-09 school year because I knew I would be needing to make some changes in order to meet the needs of all my students without any parent help in the classroom. The sisters write with such voice that you will feel as though they are in the room with you. I had so much success with the structure of Daily 5 that I recently spent a summer afternoon with 22 out of 24 of my peers to help them get started with the Daily 5 this year.
