5 out of 5 stars I'm Not Sick; I'm Just Pregnant   February 21, 2010
MomintheMission (San Francisco, CA)
One of the first things I said to my loved ones when I told them I was expecting my first child was, "Please, don't get me any pregnancy books". I did receive Your Pregnancy Week by Week". It's great if you want a big list of Don'ts and want to be informed of everything that could go wrong in the next 9 months. I decided early on thta I wanted a completely natural birth. (Yeah, I guess I am a bit "granola" but part of the decision was entirely selfish. I just wanted to be able to brag about it.) My "BabyDaddy" and I interviewed a doula and she recommended this book. We immediately checked it out from the library (and renewed multiple times before purchasing). The book is directed toward the "birth partner" and I like the fact that it treats the reader as an intelligent individual capable of making their own decisions. Even if you don't plan on having a drug-free birth, this book provides clear/non-biased information on typical mother/baby procedures and pros and cons of each. It covers the most common methods of pain-relief (natural and chemical) and (cheesy) visuals with a handy chart for which works best when. It covers all of the tests you may have and what they are for. It's just a great source of information about the whole process and always keeps in mind that you're not sick, you're just pregnant. (P.S. Mission accomplished; me (with my sole birth partner, the "BD") had a successful all-natural birth and are now the happy parents of a 7 month old baby girl).

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Information For Both Parents!   December 11, 2009
Serethia A. Haggard (Fort Smith, AR)
My husband and I read this book together and it has a LOT of very useful information! She goes over everything possible with your pregnancy and the pages are marked with reference words so you can flip through it later if you want to go back and read about a certain thing.

5 out of 5 stars Husband educated himself on child birth!!   November 13, 2009
Frances Stcyr
This was a great book for my husband who used this book to educate himself about child birth. This book is VERY complete and goes through everything from medicated to unmedicated to surgical birth. Even gets into what happens after birth. When we went to lamaze class my husband was ahead of the class and already knew all the answers :)

5 out of 5 stars Birth Partner   November 9, 2009
C. Rhoday
The Chapter on Comfort Measures during labor is helpful for those who are not aware of positioning, massage, & other strategies to soothe & ease labor pain. Excellent Book.
Explanations of hospital procedures/interventions as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I read to prepare for labor   October 21, 2009
K. Nielson (Indiana)
I was very nervous about labor, most especially about interventions (epidurals, pitocin, c-sections, etc.). The Birth Partner had up-to-date, relatively detailed information that allowed me to feel more prepared for labor. I appreciated the matter-of-fact, even tone. Even though it is clear Simkin advocates for the most natural labor possible, she doesn't use scare tactics or overblown statistics to try to convince the reader that there's only one true way to have a baby.

If you happen to need intervention (like me), it's great going in with a reasonable understanding of what's going to happen and what the risks are (and aren't!). I went to 42 weeks with my baby and had an induction with cytotec and pitocin. I was very nervous about the induction and tried many of the natural remedies suggested in The Birth Partner (though not castor oil). They didn't work, which told me my body really wasn't ready for labor. The pitocin did work, though (as it should) and many of the strategies I read about in The Birth Partner were helpful for me coping with the labor pains.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone having a book or assisting in a birth. I've lent it out a couple of times to friends and they've all had good things to say as well.
