Amazon.com Review
Used as a reference by students of acupuncture, this is a hefty, truly comprehensive guide to the theory and healing power of Chinese medicine. It's also a primer on nutrition--including facts about green foods, such as spirulina and blue-green algae, and the "regeneration diets" used by cancer patients and arthritics--along with an inspiring cookbook with more than 300 mostly vegetarian, nutrient-packed recipes.

The information on Chinese medicine is useful for helping to diagnose health imbalances, especially nascent illnesses. It's smartly paired with the whole-foods program because the Chinese have attributed various health-balancing properties to foods, so you can tailor your diet to help alleviate symptoms of illness. For example, Chinese medicine dictates that someone with low energy and a pale complexion (a yin deficiency) would benefit from avoiding bitter foods and increasing "sweet" foods such as soy, black sesame seeds, parsnips, rice, and oats. (Note that the Chinese definition of sweet foods is much different from the American one!)

Pitchford says in his dedication that he hopes the reader finds "healing, awareness, and peace" from following his program. The diet is certainly acetic by American standards (no alcohol, caffeine, white flour, fried foods, or sugar, and a minimum of eggs and dairy) but the reasons he gives for avoiding these "negative energy" foods are compelling. From the adrenal damage imparted by coffee to immune dysfunction brought on by excess refined sugar, Pitchford spurs you to rethink every dietary choice and its ultimate influence on your health. Without being alarmist, he adds dietary tips for protecting yourself against the dangers of modern life, including neutralizing damage from water fluoridation (thyroid and immune-system problems may result; fluoride is a carcinogen). There's further reading on food combining, female health, heart disease, pregnancy, fasting, and weight loss. Overall, this is a wonderful book for anyone who's serious about strengthening his or her body from the inside out. --Erica Jorgensen

4 out of 5 stars Lots of very good content, but...   November 24, 2009
E. Carr
Its obvious the facts are well thought out and presented about the importance of a balanced diet of whole foods at its natural state, and body type awareness. There is enough knowledge here to fill nearly every page without the use of meaningless commentary. The author explores subjects carefully, including TCM, while giving enough facts to be careful of suggesting that someone treat their own serious disorder. As this requires a qualified Dr. there is enough here to build interest to look further into many of the subjects the book covers.

The one reason I could not give this book a solid 5 stars is the authors incessant comparisons between American, specifically, and Chinese diets, which at times makes this book frusterating to read. There is an aire of superiority to his words at times and it comes off as the all too familiar native rejecting their own culture and over induldging, an artificial zealous embrace of another. As if the Chinese diet is everyones savior. He sometimes, nearly at best, distinguishes between ancient rural diets and the modern Chinese diet; he faintly hints at the changing society and eating habits in China. Also doesnt mention the state of poverty in much of China in ancient times and the necessity to farm nor does he mention many other diets of the world or specify that he is speaking of monastic life rather than rural famine but gives an overall "this is the best diet ever, everyone elses is terrible". With all that is written about the traditional rural diet, I sense other facts were ommited that while not important to this book, he seems to want to almost cover them up. For instance there is no mentione of the lines around corners for Pizza Hut in china, while not important, dont act like the Chinese have flawless diets. Diets aside, when it comes down to food itself and whats in it and whats happening, hes very detailed.

I am a student of qi gong and TCM, studied medicine and Taoist practices with a priest in a Beijing monastery and Ive spent time in china in the city, monasteries, and rural areas. Ive always eaten well but this book helped me gain a much deeper understanding to foods I am already eating, and enhanced my consciousness.

This book seems to have all the information you need to choose foods wisely and eat healthier. I will use this as a reference for my food selections as much as I possibly can. It is extremely thorough and well laid out to make it simple to find what you are looking for.
I have learned so much from this book in the short time that I've had it.

This book has tons of information in it. The recipes are tasty and easy. Highly recommend this book if you want a different look at food and what effects the food might have on you.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing source of information on the food you eat   August 7, 2009

Healing with Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford is an amazing book. It is amazing for the depth that it goes into in how asian traditions combined with modern medicine can be used in making you healthier by what you choose to eat. This book is well over 600 pages, and while it is thick, he does a wonderful job of boiling down this vast amount of information and will help you to customize a diet that works well for you. Since reading this book I have made many changes to my diet, and I feel better. Much of this book contains very sound traditional ideas on diet and exercise, but I like where it dives into why Asian practice is different and what the theories are on what will make you feel better.

So often in western medicine we are given cookie cutter diets that are perscribed to everyone, and this book really helps you develop a more customized approach. I like that this book will ask you questions and go over a variety of symptoms then explain why your body may behave like it does, and then the author will help you make changes that will help with these symptoms and help you heal your body. Generally none of the approaches are too extreme, but rather small choices you can make that will help make a difference.

My only complaint with this book is that it really advocates leaving out the dairy and meat out of your diet. Personally, for me, this isn't a choice I want to make at this time. I do choose to limit red meat intake, and ensure that the quality of protien I get is high, and I sometimes eat vegetarian, but not always. If you are interested in a wholistic approach that teaches something other than low fat diet, check this book out. This is an amazing read and if it can help you with even one or two minor health issues this is worth the price of the book just on the fact you don't have to reach into a medicine cabinet and try to cure yourself.

This book amazed me, it examines the complete process that is required to maintain healthy eating habits. It explains the basics but reveals deeper meaning into our lifestyle and consciousness, to give in depth information that will allow you to understand and apply these concepts. Out of all the books I have read, this is by far my ultimate choice, I have already purchased copies for friends because I do believe this book can change your life.
