5 out of 5 stars Jack LaLanne: health icon   October 31, 2009

Jack LaLanne's remarkable health and vitality have always been an inspiration for me. How does he do it? Can I do it? In this book has he finally put it all together so that any of us can do it? I am not sure that we all can do what he has done, but I am sure that he has told us how he did it.

In the modern style, he reduces his ideas into a 12-step program. Those steps, each the topic of a separate chapter, are:
Motivation
Stay Away From Killer Habits
Personal Care
Eating Clean
Maintain Perfect Posture
Stay Well Hydrated
Stretching
Find Some Energy
Be In A Solid Relationship
Work Out
Never Retire
Consume Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables.

Like some of the other reviewers, I found a lot of his advice to be elementary level. It was not the kind of "secrets" book I was hoping to find. My expectations were not met, but that was a problem with my expectations. In this book Jack tells you what he did - and for him it has been a great success.

If you were to categorize Jack LaLanne, you would say that he is someone who has mostly lived by the conventional wisdom - rigorously applied - and shown how you can achieve great results for yourself that way. The fact that he has no "secrets" to disclose poses a threat and challenge to all the experts and gurus who try to peddle such secrets. His message seems to be a simple one: clean living, positive attitude, whole foods diet, and regular exercise. It has worked for him.

Jack LaLanne is a very quotable guy. Here are my favorite nuggets from the book:

-There is no fountain of youth. What you put in your body is what you get out of it. (10)
-If man makes it, don't eat it. I do my best to avoid anything in a can or a box. (14)
-Anything in life is possible, and YOU make it happen. (15)
-You really can change your life. (34)
-Most of the causes of dying before one's time are avoidable. (38)
-I learned my lesson about moderation. Just because one apple is good for you, it doesn't mean that 80 apples will do 80 times as much good. (24)
-Your workouts will not exceed 30-40 minutes. And you won't do them every day of the week. (33)
-You came into this life alone and you're going to leave it alone. But in between, make the rest of your life the best of your life. (275)

Thanks, Jack LaLanne, for showing us a way to live!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Exercise and Nutrition Information   October 28, 2009

I love this book and I love Jack Lalanne. I also read his previous book, 'Revitalize'. This particular book was inspiring enough for me to give it five stars in spite of the fact that a page or two was missing from my copy. I believe it was about Page 112 or 114. I don't have the book with me as I'm writing this. Nevertheless, it was at a point where Jack was writing about organic produce versus inorganic with the pesticides and herbicides, etc.

Jack, if you're reading this, please email me the missing pages and all is forgiven. By the way, I tried steam-cooking fresh fish the way you recommended in one of your TV shows and it was terrific. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars Great Words of Wisdom from a Master!   October 28, 2009
A. Tucci (Toronto, ON)
This is probably one of the best books I've read about getting motivated and getting up off the couch. It has all the basics for a beginner who's looking to get leaner, and healthier. Jack goes through all the major problems we face now preventing us from enjoying life and how to combat them and live young forever! There's great facts on the right foods and great tips on how to start exercising properly. It's definitely a great start for any beginner!

5 out of 5 stars Jack LaLanne is a treasure!   October 27, 2009

Jack LaLanne is a treasure! He is straight forward with his advice. At first glance, some of the advice - like personal hygeine - may seem overly simplistic. But Jack is covering all the areas of leading a fit healthy life, and felt the need to include all aspects. His advice and exercises are well presented. You can't beat 80 years of success! Who knew jumping jacks were named after him? I am now going to ask for the JL juicer for Christmas.
