Product Description December 1802
My hand is trembling as I write this letter. My nerves are in tatters and I am so altered that I believe you would not recognize me. The past two months have been a nightmarish whirl of strange and disturbing circumstances, and the future…
I am afraid.
If anything happens to me, remember that I love you and that my spirit will always be with you, though we may never see each other again. The world is a cold and frightening place where nothing is as it seems.
“Absolutely Fascinating. Amanda Grange seems to have really got under Darcy’s skin.” — Historical Novel Society

A Captivating Book February 24, 2010 A. King (Acworth, GA) I read all of the reviews concerning this book (mostly bad reviews I might add) and decided to purchase this book and read it with an open mind. I thought this was a wonderful book, very interesting and it was not packed full of sex upon sex. In other words, it had a plot. Yes, this was not your typical Darcy and Elizabeth and yes, it did not stick with Jane Austen's style but after all it is fan fiction. My only complaint would be that when Darcy and Elizabeth finally do consummate their marriage I would like more than a 1 sentence description. Well done, Amanda Grange. I give you 4 stars.
expected better February 21, 2010 Heather Crozier (Utah) This was a light and fun adaptation of what happens after Pride and Prejudice. Why is Darcy so brooding and miserable all the time? Well, now we know...he's a vampire! Well, there's not a lot of vampire action, and she didn't quite portray Lizzy the way I imagined her in the original Pride and Prejudice, but it was still a fun twist and well worth at least one read.
Not Zombies, but Vampires! ... but not very true to Austen, either. February 13, 2010 A. Lee (L.A., CA USA) What with zombies and sea monsters invading Jane Austen's world lately, having Darcy be a Vampire is no huge surprise. Of course, it's all in the telling. Here, the author doesn't have to mess much with canon since this tale begins at the end with the weddings of Lizzy and Jane with Darcy and Bingley. Afterwards, instead of heading to a happy ever after at Pemberley, Lizzy finds herself going with a strangely distant Darcy to the Continent.
Lizzy seems strangely un-Lizzy-like as she responds to the hints of something wrong by writing to Jane lots of whiny letters wishing that Jane was there to talk to-- as if Jane didn't have other things to do, and as if Lizzy was incapable of thinking or doing anything on her own when she was clearly able to do without Jane for large parts of P&P. Darcy goes back to being shut-mouth and inscrutable, which is also just wrong after having behaved badly in P&P in which he supposedly learned his lesson. But here he goes, refusing to have sex with Lizzy (for some reason... I'm not sure why vampires couldn't... I suppose he has no control and will end up biting her or something like that), and he won't tell her why, just drags her around Paris, to a distant part of France, to Venice, and elsewhere, meeting all sorts of folk who pretty much give the game away, even though Lizzy doesn't seem to catch on.
There is a nice Ann Radcliffe feel to the story, which is at least close to period... but you'd think the gothic elements would be more Northanger Abbey-ish than like the Mysteries of Udolpho... And the tale is not very romantic nor horrific. So... not the best story mixing vampires and Austen.
Flimsy and forced January 18, 2010 Asuvas (Central NY, USA) If you liked "Pride and Prejudice," you should not bother to read this. The plot is clumsy and thin. It might have been a tad interesting if there was any suspense at all--unfortunately, the ill-chosen title gives it all away. "Jane Bites Back" is a much better vampire tale.
Amusing, Creative, and Unique. January 18, 2010 Milly Marie (Sandy, UT) Told from Elizabeth's viewpoint of her and Darcy's honeymoon tour soon after their wedding. Elizabeth excited for alone time with Darcy and to travel to the Lake District, but even before they get in the carriage the story takes a turn ...
I am always weary of another author writing such classic (favorite) characters, but I thought Amanda Grange hit the mark on Austen's Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.
The entire book was very predictable (for the most part). If you did not know the title of the book you would have guessed who Mr. Darcy "really" was, by all the major "classical" vampire clues sprinkled throughout. The only major issue I had been Elizabeth's lack of intelligence. It seemed the brightest character in Pride and Prejudice became the most clueless in Vampyre. I kept thinking maybe for the time period they did not know of such things, but trying not to spoil - Elizabeth at least knew of the myths. So it was a bit confusing and it took forever for her to discover what made Darcy's dark side.
The storyline was entertaining (even if predictable) and I really enjoyed Grange's own characters. As far as the major villain I felt it was a bit of a let down.
What really made the story fun for me was the narration by Elizabeth Jasicki. Her narration brought the story to life and left me wanting to hear more! I loved everything The storyline was entertaining (even if predictable) and I really enjoyed Grange's own characters. As far as the major villain I felt it was a bit of a let down.
What really made the story fun for me was the narration by Elizabeth Jasicki. Her narration brought the story to life and left me wanting to hear more! I loved everything from her portrayal of the many characters, her accents, and just hearing her pure enthusiasm for the story she was narrating!
If you want a really fun, light, audiobook to listen to download (or buy the CD's) you will *LOVE* it! It is not to be taken seriously and I believe even a few Austen fans like myself will enjoy Mr. Darcy, Vampre.
I also look forward to reading Grange's other clever novels!
RATING: 3 1/2.
