Editorial Reviews

"The Principles of Beautiful Web Design is a good book to kick start your graphic-design journey. The biggest benefit that I got from this book is the knowledge to learn from great designs as opposed to just admiring them in a state of awe." - Slashdot.org

"Jason is a great writer, and the book is quite easy to read. It's put together wonderfully, including many full color screenshots and other forms of imagery that make the book a pleasure to read. I'd definitely recommend the book to anyone in Web design." - MondayByNoon

"Jason Beaird covers webdesign in a way that non-designers can understand. He walks you through all of the aspects of design development from initial meeting to finished product. If you are just getting into web development, this is a must read." - Blogcritics.org

"This is a thoroughly practical guide to web design that is very well written: good technical depth in easy-to-understand language with excellent illustrations and graphics that support the text. For many users it will be the only web-design text they will need. For those who want to further advance their skills and knowledge it will provide a sound foundation." - PC Update

"His "Don't just tell, show!" style makes this book accessible to everyone... It strikes a carefully thought-out balance between describing principles and illustrating them. It is clear and well structured, with practical examples in every chapter." - Mitch Wheat

3 out of 5 stars IDEA GIVING   November 22, 2009
GUIRI (CANARY ISLANDS)
It is not a book I would consider mandatory but it gives a good overview of what can be done.
It does not show you how though. It has many good links to some helpful websites to define the look and feel of your project website.

It is nice to have but nor really helpful for anyone I would compare it to a nice set picture catalogues for someone in search of visual ideas.

4 out of 5 stars The Beautiful Principles of Web Design   November 10, 2009
Angela Davis (Pullman, WA USA)
The book The Beautiful Principles of Web Design, by Jason Beaird was to my surprise very interesting. It was broken down in to five major concepts that capture what web design is and how to approach it. I really enjoyed this book because it was not to over bearing with extensive information, but had a really humanistic approach. I would give this book a 4 out of 4 stars.

Pros It gave you a tutorial on how to use CSS programs

Cons- Some concepts are a bit elementary

4 out of 5 stars Useful for Beginners to Intermediate Level Designers   September 4, 2009
James T. Humphrey II (Huntersville, NC)
I enjoyed this book. It is easy to read and is well structured. The author walks you through the concepts used to design web sites, and takes you from the drawing board to the actual implementation of a site he made. This book is ultimately about creating beautiful web sites from sound graphic design principles. The book is chaulked full of color photos of real life examples, along with numerous referrences to other resources in print and on the web.

Generally speaking, I found this book to be a good source of inspiration, and something to flip through for review. While the concepts found here are nothing earth shattering, and generally only skims the surface of issues, I think experienced designers (such as myself) can still benefit from reviewing this book.

5 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL, GREAT LAYOUT, & WELL WRITTEN   July 21, 2009

Beaird's book is very well written and a great help in understanding what make a beautiful website. Given how many truly bad websites are out there more designers need to read this book.
Before setting up the website for Snappy Sayings: wit & wisdom from the world's greatest minds I read Beaird's book and two or three others. I found his the most helpful. Now that my website is up I am going back to "The Principles of Beautiful Web Design" to improve what I have. His design ideas even helped me with the layout and design of Snappy Sayings: wit & wisdom from the world's greatest minds. I wonder if he knew he was also helping make book designs more beautiful?
There is so much in this book that web designer who are from the techie side can easily use. Years of design school and experience in an easy to understand and use format is what makes this such a great book.

3 out of 5 stars A good overview   April 12, 2009

This book reads fine and is light reading. Good enough to get familiar with the subject and go through quickly. Suitable for those unfamiliar with the process one takes to web design. For those who have built sites, it maybe too basic and familiar, at least for me it was.

First the materials and printing. The materials used on the inside was printed on stock that resembles paper used for kids coloring books. With such a strong title as "PRINCIPLES" associated with art/design type of work, it should be printed on heavier paper, and glossy too. An example would be the same stock as what Adobe uses in its Classroom In A Book series.

Next, price. $39.95 retail for this quality of book is too high for what it delivered. I seen much more stronger books with greater detail, more content, and better quality printing. This 160 page book should fall in the $29.95 and under category. Compare this book with the O'Reilly books which offers more technical depth, even the Head Rush series as well and its not on the same level.

Finally, the material. The coverage was good but it just felt too light in material. The problem is, it didn't feel authoratative, lacked depth, and looked to "Dummy" like to be titled THE PRINCIPLES OF WEB DESIGN.

"A Simple Guide To Web Design" would have been more appropriate. While I did get something out of it, it really wasn't something that deserves a "Wow this is the best book on web design" award.
