5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST!!!   November 9, 2009
Melissa M. Packard (Fort Sill, OK USA)
This is the best reading program I have ever seen! My daughter was very frustrated with our old reading program. So I searched and searched until I found this one by Jessie Wise (who, by the way, has to be the best author!) We skimmed (took us about 2 days) over the letter sound lessons because my daughter already knew the sounds. We are now 1/2 way through the lessons and she can sound out or read anything I put in front of her. She has never cried in frustration. We do 4 lessons a week and take the 5th day for nothing but review and reading. She loves it! I will be using the same book for my younger children as well!!! BUY THIS BOOK!!!

2 out of 5 stars Well Organized, but Boring   October 30, 2009
prayingmother
I purchased this book at a recent homeschool convention after visiting with Wise for awhile about my reluctant reader. I put both my reluctant reader and my beginning reader in the program. It was plain that understanding phonics better didn't improve anything for my oldest. As for my emergent reader, he fussed and complained so much about the book being boring, so I finally pulled out my old Dick and Janes and he has taken off like lightening. I'm still teaching him phonics from the Reading Lesson. That's what I used with my reluctant reader and thought that maybe it was flawed since she's struggled, but it's working much better for my beginning reader than the Teaching Reading book. I wish I would have just stuck with the Reading Lesson and not invested in another reading program. My oldest is very much a kinesthetic learner and my second very much an auditory learner and Teaching Reading didn't work for either.

I will say, in favor of the book, that it is very well organized. And perhaps if it was a little bit prettier (i.e. some pictures or colors) and the stories were a little bit interesting, that it would be a very fine program.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable resource   October 15, 2009
Eve Priest (Calhoun, GA USA)
I have a master's degree in education and tried several different approaches with my four year old daughter to teach her to read. A friend recommended this book and I was a little hesitant about investing another $20 for something that wouldn't work. After reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews, I decided it was worth a shot. I wish I would have saved my time and money on all the other approaches and done this first. My daughter has actually enjoyed doing this and asks everyday when we can do our reading lesson. I am amazed and excited with her progress!

4 out of 5 stars Calm and structured, but not especially engaging   September 12, 2009
John August (Los Angeles, CA United States)
The title is accurate: it really is designed for ordinary parents without special training. It does very straightforward phonics with a minimum of equipment (just notecards, really), then eventually introduces short sentences for a child to read aloud from the book. This made it good for travel -- we could keep doing lessons on the hotel room floor.

We're only a third of the way through the book (short words with short vowel sounds). While I mostly enjoy it, I've found that I need to supplement its lessons with other types of games and activities to keep it from being so dry. The book offers some suggestions for games, but a visit to an educational supply store would probably be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Teach anyone to be an outstanding reader!   September 8, 2009
Xena (Wichita, KS USA)
I homeschool my children, so obviously, I am responsible for teaching them how to read. This book was highly recommended to me by a fellow homeschool mom (who had previously spent hundreds of dollars on fancy reading programs and said that those were a waste of money), who used it to teach her kids how to read. Now in middle school, her kids excel on state standardized tests, and do very well in their subjects. She attributes their smartness to the foundations set for them in this book. So I got it and my son was reading by age 5. My 3-year-old already is a pro at his letters, sound discrimination, and can even tell you what the difference between a vowel and a consonant is! This book is wonderful, and makes teaching reading very easy. Not only that, this author does a fantastic job of putting lessons together for you, so all of the work is already done!
