Very basic skill review October 14, 2009 D. Freeman (Los Angeles, CA United States) I actually returned this book after looking through it. It is adequate if one only needs to review very basic math skills. It does not use the formal math terms used in high school, so will not be terribly useful to parents who are trying to assist students. There are online resources which are more helpful.
Easy to Use! September 12, 2009 Christine Lundstrom This math book helped my student earn a B plus in mathematics. I am an English teacher, but I am tutoring a 7th grader in math, and I found this book easy to use. I also tutor GED students, and I find the pages are simple to photocopy. I recommend it for teachers or parents.
How to Achieve Good Math Skills August 25, 2009 Albertee T. Jackson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book provides work sheets to improve in basic math skills. It not only helps children preparing for 6th or 7th grade but it also is a great guide to parents that wants to brush up on their fractions, percentages etc. It is basic and easy to understand. I recommend it highly.
Perfect for reviewing between 5th and 6th grade July 2, 2009 Mom (West Virginia) I bought this for my son to help him review over the summer between 5th grade math (using the Everyday Math program) and 6th grade math (when he will be using a traditional math program.) With Everyday Math, my son covered all the concepts that are in "Mastering Essential Math Skills," but he learned to use different algorithms that I know from past experience the middle school teacher will not be familiar with. For example, my son can multiply three digit numbers, but he doesn't know how to line the numbers up to the right, muliply the ones first, etc. He can divide, but not the way this book teaches. I never did quite figure out how he learned to divide with decimals, and I think his grasp on that is very weak. So I needed a book that would cover all the main topics and show him how to do it the way he will be expected to do it in 6th grade math.
I admit that we just started with this workbook, but I am thrilled to see that it covers all the topics I wanted to review, and that it shows concisely and clearly the "traditional" way to solve the problems. My son worked through the first multiplication problem and said "OK now what do I do?" I asked him what he meant, and he said "How do I get from that to the answer?" I told him that IS the answer! He was amazed that it could be so simple.
My son is only 9 (he was a young 4th grader taking 5th grade math), so I don't know about this being middle school/high school material. But I previewed the table of contents before I bought it, and could tell that it would suit my needs perfectly. Thanks!

I really loved this book when I first opened it. I am going to be a first year teacher and we are starting the year off with a review of fractions in my algebra 1 class. This book with help me a great deal because it has an entire section on fractions. Also it has other sections that are great for Geometry and etc. I am very happy that I bought this book.
