Amazon.com Review
The fact is, you cannot build a house, work on plumbing or electrical systems, repair or remodel, or do anything of much use for your home without a rudimentary understanding of basic mathematics. The Hamiltons have approached math not as a theoretical or abstract academic exercise, but have instead created a system of understanding and remembering mathematical concepts with highly practical applications for the builder, both professional and amateur do-it-yourselfer. They have eliminated confusing and intimidating terminology in favor of clear, straightforward language, guiding the reader through easy-to-understand steps and exercises that virtually guarantee retention of the information in usable form for practical applications. This book should be a standard textbook or required reading for anyone in the building trades--contractors, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and all the rest--and will likely turn into a classic text for any vocational school or class. --Mark A. Hetts

Product Description
Since everything assembled consists of either straight lines, curved lines, or a combination of both, the ability to calculate circles and right triangles is essential for anyone who works in a building trade. This simple and straightforward book explains the basic math used in construction, manufacturing, and design. Starting with fractions and decimals and moving to mitered turns and arcs, these principles are presented with detailed illustrations, practical applications, and in larger print for easy reading. The result is increased efficiency, productivity, and confidence in one's work from initial design to final product.

5 out of 5 stars Math to build on: A book for those who build   October 6, 2009
Richard A. Tully
I am just getting into this book however I did scan it when it came in the mail and it is great. I have dozens of books on building, fabricating etc. This one is one of the few that I will keep indefinitely. If you REALLY want to build like a craftsman then I would seriously suggest owning this book. The information in it can help set you above those that merely "build stuff".

This is a good book for those of us who haven't been using math on a regular basis for building. Also a lot of entry level job tests contain math, this book is good for brushing up on rusty skills, or helping build new ones. It has tests, practices and memory aids. It is mostly US measurments but also contains a chapter on Metrics. This book is focused on the skills used in the building trades. I found it helpful and easy to work with.

I found this book in a library and am now going to buy it. I am an interior design student. I have taken algebra, but never trig or geometry. Since I have a drafting class coming up (my first) I was really in a panic...until I found this book. Already I understand so much, and I've only been reading for a day! I highly recommend this book.

This is the perfect book for someone entering into the fabrication trades or for those already in, too brush up on your math skills. It is layed out in a clear and concise manner and the tests at the end of each chapter are a definite assest. When you do use this book be sure to start at the beginning and follow through each chapter as there is a great deal to be learned, even though some areas may at first appear quite elementary. Top notch study material.
