Back Exercises November 16, 2009 P. Belle Again, as with the book on neck problems, I did not find this book particularly helpful either. I either have been doing the same exercises or am prohibited from doing certain ones because of the nature of my back problem. Again, it might help someone who has not had physical therapy and want to know some general exercises to help their back.
not for mid-back pain November 12, 2009 L. Brock (Decatur, AL) I was given this book as well as the Treat Your Own Neck book by my "back" doctor when I went in for mid-back pain. Women will understand when I call this the back bra area. Treat Your Own Back focuses solely on lower back pain. There is a lot of encouragement to maintain good posture but I already have good posture so this information was not helpful to me. The exercises are some that I do in yoga class but the directions were minimal. Some of the pictures show positions that may cause or worsen spinal injury. I pointed out to my doctor that there was no instruction to lengthen the spine before rounding forward ( as this can cause compression of the spine and bulging of discs ). His reply was that this is a short book and there was not enough space to be inclusive. I would prefer a BEGINNING yoga class ( with a teacher not a dvd ) where the instruction is through and includes modifications for newbies and those of us with restricted movement. For those of you with lower back pain this book may be just what you're looking for, but for me, it was a waste of time.
Great practical EZ solutions to back pain November 7, 2009 Gary S. (North Carolina) When I received the book, I was ready to turn to the exercise pages and begin - However, I am glad I followed the instructions and read the entire book before beginning the program, and I'm happy I did since I probably never would have gone back to reread. The exercises are simple to understand and easy to do. Even though I have not progressed to the "next level", just the simple exercises have helped me tremendously and I know what to do the next time I do something stupid - like over lifting heavy items that I shouldn't attempt in the first place. This is a first class book that finally brings simplicity that works to almost anyone with back pain. Just follow the steps in the book. --and good luck to all who try it. Gary S.
Best $10 I've Spent In Awhile October 31, 2009 Robert Weideman (Tacoma, WA) I recently hurt my back at the gym trying to deadlift a heavy load off the ground. Because of a couple errors on my part (not adequately warming up to the weight and not paying attention to form on one lift) I ended on the ground with severe back pain. It was crippling. It hurt to breathe. Not one for going to the doctor or loading up on pain killers I decided to see if there were any helpful books on treating back pain. Decided to spend $10 on this book and it was the best self-help purchase I've made.
I'm only on the second day of using the exercises prescribed and feel a noticeable difference in my back. I'm positive it has a lot to do with what this book reveals about back pain and relieving it through exercise. I'm also sure that my healing process would be going a lot slower if I hadn't started the exercises.
As for the author and the book: I enjoyed it because it was short and succinct. That's important for someone who is in pain! I don't agree with those that thought strength exercises should have been included in the book. You can find that information in other literature.
Like I said, best $10 self-help purchase I've ever made.
Very helpful! October 19, 2009 Chris R. Gambill I purchased this book after my physical therapist (spine specialist) recommended it. I have had back problems for years and they have become worse as I have aged. I was seeing the therapist for consistent, daily back pain that seemed to move around from the lower back to my upper back. She began treating me using the techniques described in this book. I admit I was highly skeptical at first since it involved no manipulation, massage or ultrasonic therapy (things I had received before at various times). Using the techniques in the book, I began to experience relief almost immediately. The techniques are easy to master and highly effective. I recommend this book to anyone with back problems. You should first consult your physician before trying anything like this, but I found it very helpful.
