Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Anatomy of Movement presents a dynamic, integrated approach to the study of the physical structures of the musculoskeletal system and their functional relationship to the movements of the human body. In clear and concise text illustrated with more than a thousand graphic drawings, the author guides the reader on a lively tour of the muscles, bones, ligaments and joints of the arms, legs and trunk. The focus throughout the book is on anatomy not for its own sake, but in its functional relationship to the actual movements of the body in dance, exercise, and other physical disciplines. In this newly-revised edition, a majority of the thousand-plus illustrations are new or have been modified by the author from the original edition. The text has also been updated, and the sequencing of the presentation of the musculoskeletal anatomy has been revised in part.

5 out of 5 stars a great reference book   December 20, 2008

I got this book because of my interest in portraying the human figure in fine art and my interest in the human form as a martial artist. The human body is a complex unit and there isn't really a way to learn about it without a lot of study, but this book is broken down into smaller pieces and shouldn't be too difficult for anyone with a sincere interest to understand. The index is useful and provides quick reference to various structures. The illustrations have a good balance between detail and simplicity for understanding.

For artists without a basic knowledge of surface forms, I would suggest getting an additional reference that also shows the forms of bones and muscles as they fit together. There are illustrations showing the full figure, but they are designed more to show the movement than to show how the muscle affects form. Artists may also be disappointed by the lack of any description of head and facial muscles. People interested in general anatomy should know that only bones and muscles, ie. structures that affect movement, are explained in this book.

For me personally, I have found it very useful to learn the specific purposes of bones and muscles to help understand how they affect the dynamic form of the human body. It has also assisted my martial training by furthering my knowledge of how the human body does and does not move effectively.
