Brilliant October 19, 2009 S. Tawalbeh (CA) Dr. Marsha Linehan is clearly an expert and presents her treatment for a very complicated and dynamic disorder in this well-written, well-supported book. Organized, clear, and direct, this text provides clinicians with fantastic information and guidance in treating this troubled population.
Essential September 28, 2009 BERNARDO LINARES (SPAIN) This is one of the most helpful book y never read about psychoterapy (of course the better I know about treating borderline personality disorder). Its style and its simple and common sense contents are one of its strengths. Essential.
The Text for treatment of BPD August 23, 2009 E. Lacy (New Paltz, NY) What can I say? If you're going to learn Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for BPD- you have to have this text. You should also buy the Skills Manual since there are references to it.
I've used some of these skills/techniques with patients who have some of these traits but not BPD - there are great strategies for Behavior Analysis and determining intervention strategies, not to mention validation techniques.
On the other hand - if you are going to treat BPD - make sure to also have a clinical supervisor - it's a very complex population. There are actually on-line courses at Behavioral Tech (Marsha Linehan's Institute) where you can learn on an interactive site, as well.
Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder October 12, 2008 Man Guy Cheung (Toronto, Canada) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book by Marsha Linehan about the application of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is the most important book I have ever read, since I work in the Borderline Personality Disorders Clinic at the Centre For Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. I am currently reading it over a second time. Dr. Linehan's methods (i.e. Validation, the balance between acceptance and change, and the challenging of thoughts but not emotions) and her emphasis on the therapist's need for humility in dealing with clients who have Borderline Personality Disorder makes this the Bible for treating this difficult personality disorder that is usually resistant to treatment. A must read, not only for psychologists but counsellors and front-line DBT treatment staff as well.
Working with patients with borderline personality disorder May 6, 2007 Robin (CA, US) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Linehan has written an easy-to-read, well organized book on working with BPD; her methods are empirically based. In one review a criticism was expressed re: her use of the female pronoun throughout the book. This didn't distract me from reading and learning; it seemed a commonsense choice on Linehan's part because, as she points out, the majority of individuals with BPD are women. The accompanying workbook is worth purchasing, also.
