Great Graphics, No Text to Read November 5, 2009 A. Bowman (Northern, CA USA) Although I really like the illustrations of this book, there is no text. I guess I missed that when I bought it. We make up the stories as we go along, but I would have preferred something to read to my 2-year-old.
Great book! September 12, 2009 Momma_Pegs (Boston, MA) We got this book after our second baby was born. The picture book was great for our first born who was quite curious about the new baby. He has adjusted well to our second child and this book was helpful for us. I would highly recommend it. The pictures are gender neutral enough to use for either boys or girls.
a nurturing (not jealous) big sib August 25, 2009 R is for reader (Lincoln, NE) Unlike most "my new baby sibling" books, this one does not presume that the older sibling is jealous or angry. Why program your kids to feel that if they do not? (Mine did not.) This book shows the older sibling HELPING with the baby and playing with the baby, both activities to encourage!
There are no words, and both children are drawn neutrally enough to be either gender, so you can tell the story in a way that matches your family. The gender ROLES in the book are also very well balanced; both parents nurture and care for the children (e.g., Daddy cooks while Mommy nurses).
We read this a lot around the delivery of our 2nd child (when the older was 2), and a year later, my older child will sometimes still pick it out to read. She likes being able to tell us what is happening in each picture (since there is not a set text to read or memorize).
OK... May 26, 2009 R. A. Lavergne (Uxbridge, MA United States) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
OK so I'm one of the people that didn't read the description well and was shocked to see no words. Isn't a book by definition something you READ? I would call it a picture book or something like that otherwise, but anyways. Cute book just not into the "lack of words" thing. I understand that you can use it to explain to your child what's happening, but I bought this for my niece who's expecting a sibling and I just am not into how blah this book is.... but my own fault for not reading the description better!
Lovely, useful, to any ages. May 14, 2009 M. L. Rdz (Monterrey Mexico) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love the fact that the book has no text.
I see this as a good thing because in other books the focus is "how bad the old brother/sis feels" and I dont think I want to read that to my 2yr old son.
This book is happy, colorful, kind and loving in the way it introduces the new baby. My son took it right away and likes to see it very much.
I tell him "who is this?" is daddy... "And this is a baby, and this is you, the big brother"... he smiles but I know he is still understanding.
You can elaborate more on the drawings, its all on you and your childs age.
The book has two drawings of mom nursing, I love that. It has also a drawing of the parents reading a story to the older son, when the baby sleeping. :D
I think it is great and would recommend to anyone.
And I did a BIG search...
