4 out of 5 stars Very good but hard to learn from   September 19, 2009

I graduated with a math degree and a few months later decided I'd like to teach myself some physics. This seemed like it would be a good fit and it is, to an extent. It's very engaging and creative and I especially appreciated the chapters on harmonic oscillators, AM/FM and forced oscillation. However, the lack of exercises is frustrating. It's all very nice to follow along but it's not like I'm going to be able really understand unless I have something to practice on!

4 out of 5 stars Great books, but flawed slipcover   September 6, 2009

With the inclusion of the book "Tips on Physics", they made this little wedge in the slipcover such that the smaller, shorter book would fit alongside the original three-volume set of the Feynman Lectures on Physics. I've had difficulties more than once trying to get the books to fit properly in the slipcover because of this design flaw. It's very frustrating and I also think it detracts from the elegance and beauty of the set. I wish that if they felt compelled to include "Tips on Physics" that they just gave you the extra book - instead of trying to make it fit inside the slipcover with the other three volumes.

That's really my only gripe about this set. I even like "Tips on Physics". I just wish it wasn't crowbarred into the slipcover with the other three volumes. I'm hunting for another three volume set (the commemorative one) - the one that doesn't include "Tips on Physics" within the slipcover...

Other than that - despite the few naysayers I've heard from - I have to say that Feynman Lectures on Physics is a true classic. It's often recommended reading for Physics undergraduate students - and it's no wonder. While Feynman doesn't give tons of mathematical examples or drill work in this set of lectures (he probably saved that for the TAs), he does provide students with a beautifully intuitive and imaginative explanation of Physics - which is something that most first-year Physics text books won't give to the student. Reading through this lecture set gives you a real "feel for Physics" - something that is almost tangible, that sparks inspiration and a hunger to learn and know more.... or at least that's how I feel about them...

5 out of 5 stars just bought it!!!   June 12, 2009

I just got this volume the other day and started reading right away. Dr. Feynman was truly a genius. However, I find the paper and the binding to be a bit annoying and bulky. I wish the publisher would reduce the dimension of the book a bit so it's easier to carry around.

5 out of 5 stars why I like it   April 24, 2009

I became enamored with the FLOP when I found it in my college library about 30 years ago. He provides some unique proofs of some of the standard results in undergraduate physics. (I am professionally a chemist, but I've taught physics just as often as chemistry.) The books are a joy to read, but lack the "in-class" problems that a textbook user needs. As I understand it, at Cal Tech the students broke up into "recitation sections" after the lectures to work problems. These problems were created over lunch just after the lecture and imo aren't particularly instructive in themselves. The problems for volumes 1 and 2 were published under the title "Exercises in Introductory Physics" (if memory serves) but included neither solutions nor worked-out examples. Unfortunately, Feynman only taught the course once and he went on sabbatical immediately after the final. I'm sure that a second trial at teaching the introductory course would have included more on problem solving. Volume 3 offers a rare intro in quantum by starting with the matrix form instead of the wave equation, but Feynman probably should have tried his original idea to present some "mathematical methods of physics" rather than quantum. On the other hand, it provides a least some illustration of the use of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. (While I've had a few graduste level physics courses, the only thing they ever used C-G coefficients for was to calculate other C-G coefficients.)
The "definitive" edition corrects some sign errors in the equations (Feynman said he just worked out the numbers and then stuck in whatever signs seemed correct) and a large number of citation errors (a reference to chapter 15 should really be chapter 16, etc.). Remember again this book was written "on the fly" and wasn't really edited.
Probably the best thing about FLOP is that it shows what Feynman thought about physics -- read it concurrently with your undergraduate text -- especially if you're the teacher!
