Product Description
A comprehensive guide to polycystic ovary syndrome, from a leading authority on the condition
One in ten American women of childbearing age is affected by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to some degree, and many suffer from serious symptoms, such as infertility, early miscarriage, chronic pelvic pain, weight gain, high blood pressure, acne, and abnormal hair growth. PCOS is by far the most common hormone imbalance in women of this age group, yet few women understand the threat it poses to their health—or how to prevent it.
In A Patient’s Guide to PCOS, Dr. Walter Futterweit, a foremost authority on PCOS in America, tells women everything they need to know about this condition and how to treat it. Drawing on his twenty-five years researching and treating the condition and his ongoing long-term study of more than a thousand women with PCOS, Futterweit discusses • what PCOS is and how it affects your body • what to eat and how to exercise to control PCOS • all the treatment options, including the latest drug therapies • how to reverse PCOS-induced infertility and restore healthy skin and hair • resources for preventing, diagnosing, and treating PCOS
This comprehensive guide contains everything women need to know about PCOS—from identifying warning signs and seeking a diagnosis to finding emotional support in recovery—to regain their health and resume their lives.

This book can truly change your life! February 4, 2010 M. Mercado (Orland, CA) I bought this book because I was very frustrated that I could not lose weight no matter how hard I worked out or how careful I was about my diet and had almost every symptom associated with PCOS. I truly recommend this to women with PCOS who are trying to get pregnant and/or are struggling with weight loss. I know how hard it is, but trust me, Dr. Futterweit's diet works! I was diagnosed with PCOS four years ago when I was 18 and lost 25 pounds with metformin, but it gave me nausea and when I stopped taking it, 10 pounds came right back. Dr. Futterweit's diet helped me lose over 40 pounds in 3 months (and has helped with my amenorrhea, with no medications). If you have read other books on PCOS some information may not be new to you, but this man has researched PCOS for years, so I definitely recommend it. Thank you so much Dr. Futterweit.
Coming from a male's point o' view. November 20, 2009 V. S. Romero (Chicago) Before anything else, I wish to state that I am a male, and the whole purpose in reading this book has nothing to do with my body, but with that of my soon-to-be-wife. She discovered she had PCOS about a couple years ago now, so, since then, we've been in constant research of it.
This book was high on the list on Amazon.com, so I thought I'd check it out.
Now, you must understand that reading any medical literature can ofttimes be tedious for anyone not under constant study of the writing style, so I admit that, at times, I was bored. But I vowed to trudge on.
Knowing so little about PCOS before, I have gained so much knowledge about the subject, perhaps even more than my other half--maybe. I recommend this book to just about anyone dealing with PCOS, whether yourself or someone else. Yes, the book can get a bit dry at times, especially when it gets down to specifics about dieting plans and other such routines (at least for me), but it provides good, solid information for just about every field: dieting, exercising, emotional balancing, fertility treatment, hair reduction, and so on and so forth.
Though it may not cover all of these in great detail, it does cover a decent amount in some, whilst providing good starting points for others.
All in all, it's a great book on PCOS, as I have already mentioned. It taught me a lot about my other half, and why she can be moody at times (hopefully she isn't reading this). The author and his team are experts in the field; however, one of the only gripes I have is that there are grammatical and syntactical errors abound. It may be a minor issue for some, but as a graduate in English, these sorts of things make my eye twitch. No doubt it isn't the fault of the author, but more so of the publisher.
But don't let that deter you.
I am confident that we'll be able to have children by following some of the concepts introduced to me in this book, and, of course, through prayer.
What a relief! November 16, 2009 teanink (Australia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was diagnosed with PCOS as a teen, but no doctor ever offered me an alternative to taking the pill (and that was after asking several doctors). After a bit more research, discovering that the doctors were misinforming me left me discouraged and frustrated. What was I supposed to do?
Then, I found this book. After reading it and following the diet and exercise plan, I can tell a tremendous difference! My energy is restored, and I am able to lose weight now (something that was difficult before changing my diet). Also, Dr. Futterweit tells what types of tests each woman with symptoms of pcos should have. It's such a relief to be educated on this matter from a man who specializes in this hormonal imbalance, and not to be given the run around about pharmaceuticals.
Great for newly diagnosed October 20, 2009 Mary E. Mozinski (Independence, Mo) This book is full of great information, if you are new to the disorder. Most everything in it you can learn online. It wasn't helpful to me because I have been diagnosed for over a year and have done lots of research. For those who want it all in one place this is a great place to start.
This book is a miracle October 20, 2009 S.S. (NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Loved this book, a friend of mine told me about it...I shared with her my progress and it helped me answers several questions I had.
