Not Enough June 3, 2009 Ellen M. Duivenvoorden (Burlington, ON) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found Body Learning: An Introduction to the Alexander Technique very inspiring, but sadly lacking in the practical instruction needed to learn how to practice it. It is interesting as a general picture of Alexanders development of his technique and its benefits, but gives no idea how to do it yourself. I was hoping for more.
Very Good Introduction to the Alexander Technique December 27, 2008 Ann L. Rodiger (New York City) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Joy of Walking Well with Ann Rodiger
This is one of the best books introducing the Alexander Technique to new students. New students (I teach the Alexander Technique in NYC) often ask if there is a book they can read to remind them of the concepts they are learning in their lessons. I often recommend this book.
One of the important things that comes across in this book is that the Alexander Technique is a "technique" and something that needs to be applied in action. Often students think the Alexander Technique is something that just happens in a lesson (frequently just getting in and out of a chair which is meant to be exemplary of the tasks and movement one does in their daily activity) and they don't understand how to apply it to their work and leisure time. The photos give a clear sense of how the Technique relates to many professions and that it is a means to improving and finding a better balance in everything one does.
If you have anyone who is interested in the Alexander Technique, this is a great book to recommend to them.

Gelb writes very clearly, with good illustrations describing F. M. Alexander's technique for good body use. Many actors, singers, and dancers use this technique, and many people who suffer from joint and muscle disabilities can benefit from this book. Gelb's personal experiences help the reader to understand how to benefit from the techniques and exercises he describes.
The clearest book on AT out there February 28, 2006 A. Johannesen (New York, NY United States) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
If you are studying the Alexander Technique - whether just beginning or a more advanced student - this book is a Must! Easy to read and digest, it should be on every teacher's list. However, it is important to note that the Alexander Technique can not be learned by reading books alone. Reading this book is not a way to learn the technique. But it is a terrific supplement to private individual lessons with a good teacher!
