Best Science Reference Book August 25, 2008 A. Bobba (Tampa, FL USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book for my nephew(8 yrs). It has a lot of useful information for a student his age, along with DIY experiments and links to more info on the internet. I definitely recommend this book.
Great Reference April 28, 2008 Lindsey (Northwest) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Bought this for my fourth grader and she really likes it. The colorful photos are captivating and the links inspire them to want to look further into things. I would recommend this for a reference book or even a jumping off point to a self-made science curricula.
Great reference November 4, 2007 canoeberry (Brooklyn, NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great reference for our middle school children (ages 11-13 - good but not spectacular students). Makes science research go much more smoothly. The book itself gives good basic information on a wide variety of science topics. The web links allow them to get more in depth information when needed, or to see some cool graphic illustrations. This book has definitely allowed our kids to do a better job with their science homework and reports. I am sure they will continue to use it through high school.
Poor Binding October 28, 2007 R. Wong 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The encyclopedia is not bad with the coverage and internet links. However, as a reference book, it should be in hard cover. The book, with soft cover and poor binding, started to fall apart just a week after we used it. What a disappointment!
Not for younger kids April 27, 2006 Camera Enthusiast (Hartford, CT United States) 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
I had purchased for my 9 year old (who is a very advanced reader and gifted student) the Usborne World History book. She LOVED that book, and has read it cover to cover several times. I figured that the Usborne Science Encyclopedia would be similarly interesting to her. Wrong. She has barely touched the Science Encyclopedia. The problem with the Science Encyclopedia is that it is very complex and written at a very high level. I wouldn't recommend it for a child less than 14 or 15 and maybe even beyond that.
However, as I have skimmed the book, it seems very good, good illustrations, good content. Just not for younger kids.
