Product Description This thoroughly revised and updated version of Linda Seligman's classic book, Selecting Effective Treatments, presents a comprehensive, systematic research-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of all the major mental disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This third edition includes the most current information and expands the understanding of pervasive developmental disorders, bipolar disorder, disorders of childhood, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and eating disorders. In addition, the book expands on the sections that deal with the treatment of depression, borderline personality disorder, and more. This important resource also includes new information on assessment, the treatment of dual diagnosis, the spectrum concept of mental disorders, suicide risk factors, and new approaches to treatment.

Excellent resource! November 1, 2009 L. Lerza (Central PA) I would recommend as a gift for a new counseling graduate or for a seasoned practitioner in any mental health context!
Selective Effective Treatments February 27, 2009 Diane J. Tinkham (Portland, ME) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I find this text very jam packed and dense. It is loaded with information but not an easy read.
A must-have reference work September 8, 2008 D. Pilarte (Falls Church, Virginia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Easy to read, low on jargon and authoritative, this is the reference work on mental health therapies that should be on the every therapist's bookshelf. Seligman and Reichenberg have filled a vacuum in the genre: the go-to book for psychologists, counselors, social workers, psychiatric nurses and other non-medical professionals -- those who provide the majority of treatment for mental disorders. The authors don't advocate specific theoretical models, instead providing clinicians with a well-organized, user-friendly compendium of the latest approaches, the findings on their relative effectiveness and a unique point of view: that the most effective treatment is one that uses the innate strengths of the therapist together with the most case-appropriate treatment.
Excellent book May 24, 2008 Parallax (IL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is wonderfully written, not dry as some texts are. It is interesting reading with helpful examples throughout. I would recommend this book for any psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, or social worker who is either learning about the profession or reviewing what they have learned in the past. This is an excellent book.
Helpful for Treatment Planning March 19, 2008 K. L. Smith (Los Angeles, CA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Seligman does a wonderful job with taking disorders from major diagnostic categories and distinguishes them from each other in a systematic manner. Her book completely is in line with DSM-IV-TR guidelines and diagnostic criteria, as a matter of fact, her book is similar to the DSM-IV-TR, but in paragraph format and with a slant towards helping the practitioner effectively provide therapeutic care for the client/patient.
As I always enjoy in a professional publication, this book is a easy read and is not jargon laden. It is useful and easy to find information that may be needed to supplement information found in the DSM-IV-TR. The ending summaries and treatment planning guides are helpful and clearly related to evidenced based treatment.
