4 out of 5 stars Excellent Excel Book for Intermediate to Expert Users   November 22, 2008

I needed this book to write complex Excel formulas for a contract at work. It is EXCELLENT for the most part. It has many, many formulas in it. It's predecessor (Excel Formulas 2000) prompted this purchase becuase it explains the formulas in less than "developer" ease, which most Excel users are not developers and don't know VBA, but need to be able to use Excel and write appropriate formulas and use functions.

The only wish I could have wanted from this book is to add a bit more to the possibilities - like IF(AND(... and IF(OR. It would help immensely if someone would write a book that was "example" oriented to show formulas tied together, like IF(ISERROR(the formula),what to do if it is an error, then what to do if it isn't.) There is a real need to talk about Formula nesting in detail and explain that extensive formula nesting can be done and how. I would have given this book a 5 if these were explained better in the text. I augmented this particular need through Internet research and was able to solve my complex problems.

The book is definitely worth the purchase if you are an Excel specialist or Excel programmer and need a good reference book with well organized and easy-to-understand explanations. I highly recommend it to anyone who uses Excel and needs to create formulas. I don't think it's a book for beginners, but once you have a handle on Excel it's a definite positive addition to your reference library. It saved my new contract.

Decent purchase. Could be a little bit more user friendly. A huge amount of information and can be difficult to find what you are looking for but all in all a good tool.

This book is great. It is divided into logical topics that address what I need to do my job on a daily basis. Easy to read, straight to the point. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but there's a better choice   July 30, 2007

I've found that some reviewers say that this book doesn't give enough theory or examples are trivial or you can find that all in the Help. However, I believe that only advanced Excel users might be dissatiafied with "Excel 2003 Formulas". While that's true that it's not overloaded with the advanced theory (which is what professionals look for), it does give the beginners or intermidiate users all they need to know about formulas, and the tips and tricks offered by Walkenbach really help to discover the world of Excel.
However, on the other hand if you're interested not only in formulas, but you're also planning to study the Excel as a whole then I would recommend to get the "Excel 2003 Bible" of this author. The reason is that the "Formulas..." for the most part just copy the "Bible..." which describes usage of the whole Excel and has a lot more information than the "Formulas".
