This book has a great writing style that makes it both informative and enjoyable to read. The lists and sidebars summing up do's and don'ts make it easy to digest the information, as well as to flip through to find the issue you need help with. All aspiring children's book writers should keep this book by their keyboard!
A Must Have Reference Book for Children's Book Authors October 13, 2009 Peggy Williams (Alabama, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found that writing a non-fiction book is easy compared to writing a non-fiction book for children. As a first time author of a children's book I had many questions about the process. I felt fortunate when I found Writing Children's Books for Dummies by Lisa Rojany Buccieri and Peter Economy. They have put together a very thorough resource for anyone thinking of writing for children. For every question I had, their book addressed the subject.
Since my book, Friends in the Meadow-Birds, is an introduction to bird watching for children, it was a challenge to create an interesting story line that would keep the attention of children while presenting facts about the hobby. Writing Children's Books for Dummies has a chapter on just that, "Writing Creative Nonfiction and How-To Books". I found the whole book to be very helpful and this chapter especially.
This book really does cover every question I could imagine asking and many more that I did not know to ask. In addition to the tear out reference sheet in the front, every chapter has icon reminders on the side of the page for important facts to remember, tips and warnings about important issues. It is a must have library reference book for any children's book author. My only regret is that I did not find this book sooner.
A must-read for all aspiring authors! October 11, 2009 Barbara J. Smith (Buck Hill Falls, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is extremely informative and a wonderful reference book! I'll use it for years to come. As a long-time editor, mostly for children's textbooks, I thought it would be easy to write a children's book. And, the writing wasn't so difficult but the "getting published" part was! I finally did get my first book published but how I wish I had had "Writing Children's Books for Dummies" for guidance much sooner! This book is loaded with tips to get you through the entire process - from getting ideas to getting published to marketing your book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in writing for children.

A Valuable Tool for Children's Writers October 11, 2009 Lisa A. Maddock (Shakopee, MN USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a self-published writer of two children's books, I found out the hard way that it is a jungle out there. To sit down and write a story is the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, in the process of getting an actual book created and published. "Writing Children's Books for Dummies" is a valuable resource for anyone who is considering, or in the process of, becoming a published author of a children's book. I love the "Cheat Sheet" at the beginning of the book - lots of good tips and reminders, you can pop that right next to your computer. I was especially interested in the ideas for books promotion, which is where I am at right now with my books. Thank you to Peter Economy and Lisa Buccieri for putting out a great reference book for us writers!
