It is essential for teachers to keep current and utilize best practices for reading instruction. As a person who has taught for 23 years I am constantly looking for reading material that has a balanced reading approach. John's READER FRIENDLY format makes it usable rather than another book that collects dust on the shelf. This text includes all essential components for children to become great readers. Novice and experienced teachers will benefit from reading this text and having it as a reference. I already told my colleagues--"Get your own...I'm not sharing..." Yes, it is that good!

Great book. Excellent and user friendly resource for any reading teacher. I let a teacher borrow mine and she decided to but her own copy.

I purchased this after seeing the companion book "Improving Writing: K-8" and I'm glad I did! What a treasure chest of suggestions, ideas, reproducibles and other resources to use! The CD is great, so you don't have to bring the entire huge book (603pp) to school. What is truly great about the book is that it is organized in a prescriptive manner (i.e. Is this the reading behavior observed? ... Try this activity...). If you only purchase one resource for yourself to support the readers in your classroom, then this ought to be the one! Good for emergent readers all the way thru to struggling middle/high schoolers!

Improving Ready by Johns is a "must have" for reading teachers of all levels. It is full of strategies,reproducibles and resource lists from pre-school to high school. Every reading teacher should have this book.
