Amazon.com Review An Excerpt from Bill Watterson's Introduction: "Ive loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I dont even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal--everything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color. Its a rare gift to find such fulfilling work and I tried to show my appreciation by giving the strip everything I had to offer." A Good Collection November 10, 2009 PAVAN RAO (Manchester , UK) A well put together collection...well packaged and looks good on the shelf...
Now I need to find the time to read all of it!!
Sewn not glued November 3, 2009 Dis Hammerhand I just purchased this set to give my family for Christmas. After reading some comments about the bindings being glued, I considered returning the set. When I closely inspected my set, I see they are sewn but the signatures(bundles of pages) are small and there are no head and tail bands. The first and last signatures are also not reinforced -something I think needful in such large heavy books.
Perhaps they changed the bindings after so many duds in the earlier sets.
I purchased McMeel's Far Side set some years ago and that set has stood up well to regular use.
This set is beautiful and I will enjoy introducing my family to one of my favorite comic strips. They will learn that Calvin is not that little urinating urchin depicted on so many car windows.
Calvin & Hobbes is the best October 31, 2009 G. Aumaugher 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this for my mother who was very sad when the strip stopped many years ago. I gave it to her yesterday and she loved it! And now I have something great to read when I visit.
The Complete C&H Now Has a Companion Guidebook October 18, 2009 Ross D. Martin MD (Washington, DC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is difficult to add to the marvelous reviews provided here about this unparalleled collection. But now, nearly five years after its publication, there is something new to say. Nevin Martell has recently sent all us Calvin & Hobbes lovers a special gift: Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip. This book is Martell's beautifully rendered telling of his quest to learn more about Bill Watterson, the brilliant and reclusive creator of the tiger and his boy. If you love C&H enough to buy the complete set, you will want ("need" may be more appropriate here) to read this painstakingly researched and wonderfully written book. Read the few reviews about Martell's book, buy it, read it, and add a review of your own. And consider "recommending" this review so that more C&H fans can learn about this new satisfying read.
If you're into a collectable like this - then Yes. September 11, 2009 Scott R (Northwest USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My son wanted this. He got a lot of cash for his birthday, and reasoned that he should be able to buy something with some of it (we normally put it all in his untouched savings account).
So, we got it for him.
He read it all in about four to five days.
Didn't feel like we got a whole lot for about a hundred bucks, since he read it so fast.
But, it IS a collectable set. Not exactly a bunch of paperback editions, which are more for the casual reader. And we knew exactly what we were doing when we ordered it. It was splurging for the sake of a birthday gift.
If you're not a collector, or not looking to get an uncommon or extra-special gift, then don't get this.
Otherwise.... go for it.
