As I read this book, I was blown away by how the author just made me feel like a teen again. Ms. Lewellen has captured the essence of being a teenager -the emotions, feelings, insecurities, & curiousities of discovering oneself & one's body. Ms. Lewellen covers a broad range of topics with sensitivity & best of all humor. I would have given it a 5 star rating had it not been for some crucial editorial oversights. Page 78 discusses the different types of STD's (sexually Transmitted Diseases) with a brief description for each. AIDS, Hepatitis B, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts are correctly identified as viral diseases. However, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, & Trichomoniasis are not viral but bacterial infections. Information concerning sex must be carefully reviewed especially STD's. With viral diseases, teens must be aware that they cannot be treated with antibiotics as stated in this chapter. Viral diseases like AIDS & herpes have no cure. Also, I wish they had mentioned something about oral sex. Some may disagree that oral sex falls into the category of "having sex" but it is an activity that includes the exchange of bodily fluids, nonetheless. So, yes, you can get some STD's by oral sex (i.e. herpes). Overall, it's a wonderful book but please inform our young people with correct information.
