Product Description
NEW STUDENT GETS OLD TEACHER The bad news is that Cara Landry is the new kid at Denton Elementary School. The worse news is that her teacher, Mr. Larson, would rather read the paper and drink coffee than teach his students anything. So Cara decides to give Mr. Larson something else to read -- her own newspaper, The Landry News. Before she knows it, the whole fifth-grade class is in on the project. But then the principal finds a copy of The Landry News, with unexpected results. Tomorrow's headline: Will Cara's newspaper cost Mr. Larson his job?

Fantastic! May 18, 2009 Sarah B. Yeagle (Bonita Springs, Fl) I just finished reading this with my second grade children and they loved it. They wanted to know why I had tears in my eyes...similar to when I finished reading, "The Last Holiday Concert" with them. Andrew Clements is a fabulous author who likes to teach as he entertains. Each chapter ends and I find myself not able to put the book down, "Just one more chapter!" You will love all of his books!
The Landry Review April 23, 2009 I thought "The Landry News" was okay in the chapters 1-7, but after that it got awesome! The book starts off with a girl named Cara Landry who is in fifth grade. Cara loves the editorials in all newspapers. Cara is bored because her teacher, Mr. Larson doesn't teach at all-all he does is read a newspaper while the students work REALLY HARD!!! Cara makes a newspaper for her project to tell people about her teacher's LAZINESS.
Mr. Larson takes it off of the board, gets really mad, rips it up and throws it away.
That was the FIRST time anyone had seen Mr. Larson mad! So it was clear, the Landry News needed revision. Cara asked the teacher if she can go to the library with Joey [computer typist] to work on a "project". They go to the library and type the #2 edition of the Landry News
Afterward they showed it to Mr. Larson, he said it was good. Mr. Larson asked what Cara's favorite part of a newspaper is. Cara replied as editorials -because it shows the heart of the newspaper, where the writer says things that have emotion. One of Cara's new habits is making the Landry News every Friday.
Dr. Barns [principal] did not like the Landry News and because of that he wanted Mr. Larson fired, but the students defend him in the book. At the end a student reads a story about his parents getting divorced.
I would recommend this book. It has good listings of emotion. I guarantee you will LOVE the Landry News!
Cool Whip March 16, 2009 The LandryNews
Cara Landry is a new student at Denton Elementary and when she gets to her new school she searched for the school newspaper club. So she did and her first news paper was about Mr. Larson her teacher that was slaking off and even though he would see the paper she still published it. But she published it under true and mercy because it was the truth and it was mercy to Mr. Larson. Plus when everyone saw Cara's newspaper they knew that was the truth and then they wanted to get other teachers in trouble because of what they do wrong.
Then Cara receives an article called lost and found, but she decides to publish it even though it was a very heavy non-fiction article for Denton Elementary. Then the princable finds one of the copies and so he hates Mr. Larson and it was a great way to get him fired. Now there is a school board meeting and it's up to the kids to save Mr. Larson's job.
The genre don't judge a person by there looks is the theme is never let anything get in your way. Cara is very shy, loves to wright, she's carring, helpful. The author might of wrote this book to tell you never let anything get in your way
Read All About It! January 14, 2009 Runa Zaman (Charlottesville, VA, USA) The Landry News is a darling book for school-age children with plenty of real-world knowledge and implications. Only a few chapters in, there's already a relationship established between the reader and the characters themselves--now THAT is good character development! There are many similarities between this and other works, notably Beverly Cleary's Dear Mr. Henshaw and Kate Klise's Regarding the Fountain. The entire book is just incredibly captivating, from the basic story, to the layout (titles are newspaper headlines), to the enchanting ending. Great read, very relevant to today's world, what with all the challenged and banned books out there.
Rating: 5/5
Newsworthy September 27, 2008 Emily Taylor (Northern Utah) While I don't think this is nearly at the same level as the classic "Frindle", Clements once again makes a worthy story of kids doing something big, though it does come off as rather preachy.
We have a little girl who loves writing. So she starts a school newspaper that gets a little out of hand when she prints something controversial that nearly costs the supporting teacher his job.
It's a meaningful, touching, and often hilarious story about what kids can do and whether or not they should.
