Amazon.com Review
Did you ever wake up to one of those days where everything is a problem? You have 10 things to do, but only 30 minutes till the bus leaves. Is there enough time? You have 3 shirts and 2 pairs of pants -- can you make 1 good outfit? Don't worry -- it's just the Math Curse striking! An amusing book about dealing with numbers in everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious   August 27, 2009
J. Donohue (NJ)
This book is hilarious and both my 4 and 6 year old boys ask for this book nightly. Even my 9 year old girl loves it. It caters to all ages really. I find myself laughing hysterically. A wonderful discussion of math mixed with humor. Usually we get our books from the library, but when we find a gem, we get it for the home library. This is one of those books.

4 out of 5 stars Anxious humor   July 2, 2009
Kathleen S. Kennedy (Colorado)
Readers will have little problem finding the anxious humor in this story at it explores the days events through math problems. The intensity of this tale builds with the use of dynamic illustrations that draw you ever deeper into the curse. An absolute word feast that may have some readers checking their dictionary. A calculated treat.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my!   March 22, 2009

A fun book my middle school students pull off the shelf! They enjoy the illustrations and the problems.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the novice, Not what I was looking for. . .   January 14, 2009

Especially after seeing how much this book was used in classrooms and even loved by a kindergartener in one review, I checked it out from the library before buying it. In my estimation it would be most useful for students who are already familiar with most of the concepts and perhaps students who are already frustrated with math. It reminds me of the humor one develops after studying long and hard for a final, and yes, you can't get the subject out of your head, making up problems which are humorous but that you know don't quite make sense. But I think the humor detracts from any help the text might be in _introducing_ concepts. Parts of it are well done, but other parts are just too distracting. One example would be the page on number series where the fourth example explains
"'And one the planet Binary, kids have only 1 finger on each hand. They count 1, 10 . . . .' 1. What are the next five numbers in each sequence above? 2. Do you think Mrs. Fibonacci has been to the planet Tetra? 3. How would you bowl if you lived on the planet Binary?"
I'm happy if this book is useful in promoting math literacy. It's definitely for older children. For younger ones, I'd recommend the CATegorical books by Brian P. Cleary; with fun rhymes and a much more direct approach to explaining and introducing concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the math lover in your life   November 29, 2008
AvidAcrossThePond (New England)
Math Curse is a delightful introdution to some of the most famous formulas and figures in mathematics. I've always hated math, but I was thoroughly charmed by this whimsical adventure illustrated by the incomparable Lane Smith.

For younger children, Math Curse is an excellent way to gently nurture an interest in math. Thanks to Jon Scieszka's lively text, the fundamentals of higher math are easy to understand.
