Amazon.com Review In this comprehensive and entertaining resource, David Macaulay reveals the inner workings of the human body as only he could. In order to present this complicated subject in an accurate and entertaining way, he put in years of research. He sat in on anatomy classes, dissections, and even reached inside the rib cages of two cadavers to compare their spleen sizes. He observed numerous surgeries, including a ten-hour procedure where a diseased pancreas was removed, as well as one where a worn-out old knee was replaced by a brand new one. This hands-on investigation gives Macaulay a unique perspective to lead his readers on a visual journey through the workings of the human body.
The seven sections within the book take us from the cells that form our foundation to the individual systems they build. Each beautifully illustrated spread details different aspects of our complex structure, explaining the function of each and offering up-close glimpses, unique cross-sections and perspectives, and even a little humor along the way. This one-of-a-kind book can serve as a reference for children, families, teachers, and anyone who has questions about how his or her body works. When readers see how David Macaulay builds a body and explains the way it works, they will come away with a new appreciation of the amazing world inside them.

Great book March 23, 2009 Steven Malech (San Jose Area) If you are at all interested in the way the human body works you'll love this book. Its a cool gift book even for kids.
Recommended by a friend... January 23, 2009 Thomas J. Brucia (Houston, TX United States) A bit advanced for my three-year old grandson, but I suspect his father will enjoy it (and three year olds do grow up bit by bit).
Easy to Digest January 10, 2009 Happy (Pennsylvania) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My first exposure to this book was hearing the interview of David Macauley on NPR. I was hooked and ordered the book from Amazon that very day.I believe he mentioned it took about 8 years to complete this project. Plus, he illustrated this book with neat colored pencil style drawings that are fun in their own right.
You could call me a useless trivia junkie. I enjoy reading factual accounts on history, politicians, and science. (To name a few)
So this great little human body user guide is great for someone like me.
Did you know that "on an average day kidneys process the equivalent of twelve bathtubs full of blood to produce one big soda bottle full of urine?" (Page 138)
Mr. Macaulay said he wrote this on about an 8th grade level. That's fine with me! Nobody really wants to read a medical journal for fun. This book was easy. I didn't sit down and read from cover to cover right away. I was reading other novels at the time and busy with other things. But this book allows the reader to come back at any time. It is not necessary to read in order or read at one time.
Most people will already be familiar with a lot of the information that is in this book. It is not written for medical professionals. It is written for folks that want an easy to understand account of how our body works on a day to day basis. For that, I found it charming and fun to read.
His illustrations are entertaining and interesting to examine. Nobody will feel put off by this simplified and easy to digest guide to the human body. He did a nice job of explaining every function with a mix of medical science and story telling. The final result is palatable for 14 year olds and up. Just don't expect it to get too technical. It's a good read for the entire family.
