Ideal text for self-teaching October 10, 2009 Geremy Condra (South Carolina, USA) By far my preferred text on the subject- the material is clear and well organized, the progression from subject to subject feels constructive rather than coerced, and the provided examples keep the topic practical without sacrificing its generality. Most importantly the exercises are illustrative and well-constructed, and the answers to odd numbered ones are provided in the back, which was critical for my needs. I found the author responsive to my questions, and having verification applications provided on the author's website helped me relate to the topic (my background is in CS). Proofs are intuitive and usefully structured, although not as formal as those found in some other texts, which I felt kept the focus on the topic at hand. All in all, one of the very few texts I unreservedly recommend.
Great book. September 23, 2009 Seles Gilliams (Chicago, IL USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Thank you for sending the textbook in a timely manner. I really appreciate it.
I've read worse September 18, 2009 Natalie Krzyzanowski (Illinois, USA) This book is disorganized and is not well-written. The examples are decent, but that's about the only good thing about the book. Definitions and theorems are horribly explained and it's really hard to learn.
I'm a math major and I learned more abstract algebra from my proofs book than this one. I would not recommend it.

This book will probably come in handy this semester considering I have a professor with an accent I can't understand and handwriting I can't read. I like that the answers to the odd questions are in the back of the book.
Comprehensive yet not too much so February 13, 2009 mathstatman (Michigan, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gives enough detail for solutions without restating the obvious. As a result, it is thin (< 1 cm) and easy to carry around.
