Amazing intro book October 27, 2009 Aram Dermenjian (San Francisco, CA USA) I took this with an undergrad intro to adv math class and it was amazing! Although the book has some glaring errors, I'm sure the latest edition has fixed all of these. Although the price is a little high, it gives you a good basis for every topic of advanced math and teaches you how to write proofs well.
Great logic. Easy read. September 12, 2009 Luz E. Cabrera (Los Angeles, CA) Needed this book for class. It is an easy read book. Gives great and useful examples for the assignment. Contains selected solutions in the back of the book.
Corrections made August 18, 2009 Aeryk (Minnesota, USA) To all of you reading the other reviews that complain about the numerous typos in this addition, do not be deterred. I recently purchased this book and have found most of the aforementioned errors to be corrected. My guess is that the author/publisher made the corrections before the second printing. Unfortunately, if you're buying the book used, you won't know if it's with or without errors.
Awful, awful, awful August 3, 2009 ast 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't even know where to start. This is literally the most useless book for any class that I've ever had. Most of the answers that the authors come to are a mystery. The examples in the book are not related whatsoever to the practice problems at the end of each section. To make things worse, the sections almost never have any worked out problems in the back of the book. You're pretty much in the dark.
And yes, it's true, the book does assert on page 20 that 1 + 2 != 3: "The open sentence P given by x + y = z is written as P(x, y, z). We see that P(4, 3, 7) is true because 4 + 3 = 7, while P(1, 2, 3) is false."
On page 164, they use the term infimum without ever defining what an infimum is. In fact, they don't even use the word infimum anywhere else in the chapter, let alone the section. You have to skip 4 chapters ahead to understand what an infimum is (unless you have Wikipedia on-hand.)
Finally, the last piece of evidence that I needed to confirm that this book is utterly worthless came during a study session with a classmate. We were working problem 4A on page 211 and came up with wildly different solutions. The reason? My book has a +, his book has a -. The kicker? The books are the same edition, and were printed in the same year. That's right, that's how incompetent the authors/editors of this book are. I didn't even know it was possible for that to happen, but apparently it is.
