Amazon.com Review An Interview with Gayle Forman Q: You started your career as a journalist and your first book is a travelogue about going around the world. Is YA literature a departure for you? Gayle Forman: Actually, itâs more of a homecoming. My first writing job was at Seventeen, where I spent five years on staff and as a contributor reporting the magazineâs social-issues stories. I loved writing for teens then becauseâcontrary to popular opinionâthey really care about serious issues (from child soldiers in Africa to kids embroiled in the drug war here) and the engage in their reading with such passion. So, now that Iâm writing young-adult literature, it feels like Iâve come full circle. Q: This book explores some serious themes. Why is this a book for kids and not adults? GF: Itâs a book for kids precisely because it explores serious themes. Teenagers are grappling with choices about life and love as much as adults, so why shouldnât their reading reflect that? I donât set out to write YA. It just seems like Iâm drawn to stories about young people. That said, I think If I Stay is for adults, too. I love the idea of teens reading this book and then handing it off to their parents. Q: Many key characters are serious musicians, and songs are referenced throughout the book. Are you a musician? GF: No. Except for piano lessons when I was a kid and a brief spate of guitar playing in my teens, Iâve never played an instrument. I am, however, a huge music fan. And my husband is a musician; he was playing in a punk band when we met, so Iâve spent a lot of my life ensconced in that scene. I seem drawn to writing about musicians, though Iâve never been all that interested in the cello until Mia popped into my head. Q: What inspired you to write this book? GF: Music. Oregon. People I have loved. And unfortunately, the book is inspired by a real-life tragedy that happened several years ago. Q: This is a book about death, but itâs not depressing. Why is that? GF: Maybe because itâs really about the power of loveâof family, friends, musicâand therefore it ultimately affirms life.
Product Description In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeenyear- old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she fi nds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck... A sophisticated, layered, and heartachingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all makeand the ultimate choice Mia commands.

I only liked the ending.... November 23, 2009 lesliepha (Oroville, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was a beautiful story but I found it really boring for the most part. It's sad but not sad enough to make me wanna cry. I thought it was going to be like The Lovely Bones but it didn't really measured up. The best thing about this book was the ending....I loved how she ended it with a lot of good and touching quotes at the end. Did you also know this book is being turned into a movie....I look forward to it. I think it'll be better than the book for some reason:-)
Get your Kleenex ready for this one November 15, 2009 T (NC) It is always difficult for me to write reviews for books that do not have any flaws in my opinion. "If I Stay" is one of those books. This story of love and family, of choices and happiness, is just so superbly written I am a little lost for words.
I think the genius of this book is in the realness of the characters and emotions they experience. Not even once do you feel that you are manipulated into feeling what you feel. The story, while tragic, never crosses over into melodramatic or sappy.
Another aspect of the book that I enjoyed (to my surprise actually) was music. I am not really a musical person, but music is an extremely important player in this book. It brings people together, it changes people's lives, it makes you want to continue living when you think you can't go on. In that respect this book reminded me a little of a movie "August Rush" that I also enjoyed to my surprise.
Gayle Forman definitely earned my respect with this book. I don't know if she will be able to duplicate this success, but I am curious to check out her other books.
wonderfully written book November 1, 2009 debutante (gibson city, il) I read this book in a few hours and thought it was one of the best books I have ever had the privellege to read. Mia is a complex character and I felt her pain at the loss of her family and with her struggle to stay or to go tobe with them. This is one that should not be missed.
Unbelievably moving - one of the best books I've read this year October 25, 2009 Sophia (the Pacific Northwest) "If I stay" tells the story of Mia, a gifted cellist, who appears to have everything - a handsome talented boyfriend who both gets and loves her; a fun, hip quirky family, good friends and a bright future. She faces a tough choice: whether to stay home with her friends and family, or whether to pursue her musical studies in the new world of New York City.
Then, one day, everything changes. And Mia's choice becomes a lot harder, and a lot more elemental.
This book is amazing, showing, rather than telling how fragile life and happiness are, how everything can change in the blink of an eye. It neither sugarcoats, nor minimizes tragedy. No matter what, things are not going back to the way they were. Music is also woven throughout the book, playing an especial role in the ending (which had me in tears). "If I stay" also shows, rather than tells, how powerful love is, whether it's through a private conversation Mia's grandfather has with her, or watching her best friend and boyfriend, who previously hadn't all that much to say to each other, pulling together in this time of crisis.
This short (170-page volume) is simply and beautifully written, and packs a tremendous emotional punch. It's going on my shelf, for me to pick up when I need reminding of just how precious life is - and it's going on my gift list. Highly recommended - probably the best book I've read this year.
Beautiful Story! October 6, 2009 L.J. Boldyrev (Brooklyn, NY United States) IF I STAY is a gripping story told by Mia, a teen girl pressed to make a difficult decision. After a car accident that leaves Mia an orphan, she finds herself set apart from her comatose body, unable to interact with the living. Mia watches her remaining family members and friends as they come in and out of the ICU and she knows she must decide if she should stay with them--her boyfriend Adam, her best friend Kim and her grandparents, or if she should leave and accept death.
I cried. I won't lie. I really enjoyed this book. It's sad, but not overly so. I was cheering for Mia to stay! I won't tell you if I got my wish, but I will say I think it had a happy ending. Who doesn't love a happy ending?
