Product Description How did salesforce.com grow from a start up in a rented apartment into the world's fastest growing software company in less than a decade? For the first time, Marc Benioff, the visionary founder, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com, tells how he and his team created and used new business, technology, and philanthropic models tailored to this time of extraordinary change. Showing how salesforce.com not only survived the dotcom implosion of 2001, but went on to define itself as the leader of the cloud computing revolution and spark a $46-billion dollar industry, Benioff's story will help business leaders and entrepreneurs stand out, innovate better, and grow faster in any economic climate. In Behind the Cloud, Benioff shares the strategies that have inspired employees, turned customers into evangelists, leveraged an ecosystem of partners, and allowed innovation to flourish.

This is the entrepreneurial book of the year.....A must for all business leaders November 17, 2009 Mark Roady I just got done reading this book and could not put it down. I read it cover to cover in one weekend! It is a must read for anyone starting or already running a company. Although most may think it is geared toward a high tech company, most all of the key points apply to any sound businss...or should.
I was especially excited and interested in the way the company was started with a philanthropic model of giving back from the beginning. It is much better to build something when you know it will leave a legacy and add value for others due to the generous nature of the endeavor.
Other good principles are uncovered about hiring the best people from the start, being bold in your actions and how to establish effective sales and marketing teams. I want to thank Marc for being so open in sharing the journey of the company and all the value it has created and will continue to create in the future.
A Must Read - Simple, Actionable, Effective November 6, 2009 Keith Nealon This book is addictive. I read it cover to cover in one go. Honestly, the teachings are simple, actionable and effective. They remind me of the inspiration and guidance delivered in other great books such as "Good to Great" and "The 5 Dysfunctions of team"
It still amazes me, whether you have read this book or not, Marc and salesforce.com team have created so many valueable insights (free trial, innovative telesales models, corporate philanthropy) that go ignored by so many CEO's because "our company is different" or "our customers are different". Nonsense! Adapt it to your business - sure, but ignore them at your peril.
This book shares simple formulas on what it takes to make a difference. You'll feel revived, refreshed and energized with a sense of focus, ready to take the next hill in your quest for market adoption, success and ultimately, domination.
Long live the SaaS revolution!
Keith
An Entrepreneur's Insight into Success October 30, 2009 Joseph A. Poch (San Francisco, CA, US) The book sheds light on the secrets to the success behind [...]. Benioff creates an easily digestible playbook that all entrepreneurs, managers and even employees can learn from. As an entrepreneur, I found this book to be a blueprint for creating a successful business. Just reading the book, also makes one excited to get out there and put these lessons to practice. I would even recommend the book to those who are looking for a job, because it can give them an idea of the type of leadership and company model that makes for an exciting job and workplace.
Playbook for the entrepreneurial spirit October 30, 2009 davyboy (berkeley, ca usa) As an entrepreneur I found this book very useful. Having a great idea in business is not enough -- you have to get it out there and be able to deliver it in a new and effective way. I have read many how-to business books and at the end you ask, "What did I get out of this"? Not true with this book. Marc Benioff has built a great company and shared his playbook with us. It was written in an enjoyable personal style and is nothing less than inspirational.
Not The Usual Self-Serving Blather October 25, 2009 Michael Hickins (New York, NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
CEOs often feel the need to share their wisdom with the rest of us common mortals, and end up sharing nothing but their own sense of superiority. Marc Benioff, CEO of [...], does a wonderful job of actually sharing teachable moments along the road to creating a very successful company, and arguably a new way of doing business. He also shows how he built his company to be socially responsible from the outset.
Without the pompous cadence of the motivational speaker, Benioff and his co-author, Carlye Adler, actually manage to impart useful information for anyone looking to start their own company while remaining interesting to the casual reader. There's also a lot of information about the prevailing technology culture and insights that help those of us who don't live on the West Coast understand the special brew of technology, entrepreneurship and spirituality that make it what it is.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is open to the positive side of capitalism and disappointed by what they've experienced thus far. Marc Benioff has done more than create a great company; he's set a great example.
