Too much, too fast . . . November 2, 2009 E. P. Cane (Moab, UT) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know that Blender is a complex program, so I chose this book because I'm a total beginner with 3D stuff. Problem is, the book keeps giving you advanced stuff without ever letting you get your feet wet with some simple operations. It left me feeling annoyed and impotent as I just kept turning pages waiting for the equivalent of a "Hello world!" project to help me get my bearings.
For example, the first chapter goes into detail explaining why windows in Blender don't overlap (why should I care). Then the second chapter gives way too much detail on how to change my user interface and preferences (how can I have preferences if I've never used the program before, i.e., shouldn't this be in an appendix?). And so on.
The book also fails to explain all the terminology associated with 3D imaging, instead constantly comparing Blender to other 3D systems, which doesn't seem to be a big concern for people who are buying a "Dummy" book.
Perhaps as I come to understand Blender, I'll also come to understand why this book is written the way it is. If that day ever comes, I'll edit this review. In the meantime, I think I'm just going to do some of the Tutorial projects at the Blender website and then come back to this book when I'm feeling a bit less at sea (which is what this book was SUPPOSED to do for me!)
Easy Blender August 18, 2009 Sherri T. (Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Once again, I happy with my Dummies Book purchase. The first thing I need to know about any software I'm learning to use, is what the user interface is all about. A written reference is always best for me. I'm actually beginning to use this software after getting this book. I tried to use Blender a couple of years ago, but it was being being immersed in a foreign culture where I didn't know the language at all! I got rid of the software. Some of the executions used with Blender are nearly opposite of simple commands used in other software. This book makes demystifies much of that.
Once I learn the simplest basics, then I can go online to learn more advanced techniques. That's what this book is all about and the authors purpose. I think that goal has been achieved.
Blender is supposed to fast to use (but not necessarily easy to learn). After getting this book and having experience with other very high priced 3D software, I'm beginning to see why it is faster to use. I recommend this book for anyone who needs high powered 3D software like me, (a landscape architecture student with plans to return to self employment upon graduation), but can't possibly afford the several thousand dollar price tag of comparable software.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!
Fantastic for 3D Users new to Blender June 15, 2009 Kira M. Santucci (Pittsburgh, PA United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you're an experienced 3D user that needs to pick up Blender, this is the text for you. After struggling through the "Essential Blender", "Blender for Dummies" is a breath of fresh air. Unlike the other book, this book doesn't waste time telling you how awesome Blender is, but instead focuses on telling you how to get work done in this program. Where tools are, how they work in Blender as opposed to other softwares, why the interface is so strange, and so forth. Every page is useful and quickly built my understanding of this foreign program. My only mistake was hesitating in getting it.

Great book for learning Blender. Easy style and explanations. This book is a must have if you want to learn the powerful software Blender.
Good read, well written May 30, 2009 D. T. Schaefer (Oxnard, CA United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am new to Blender and very intimidated by the user interface. This book, however, gives a very good introduction to Blender. It is not an advanced book, but if you're just looking to get over the initial hesitation to dive into Blender, I highly recommend this book.
