Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery was first published five years ago, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work. In the intervening years, Herman's now classic volume has changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims. In a new introduction, Herman chronicles the incredible response the book has elicited and explains how the issues surrounding the topic of trauma and recovery have shifted within the clinical community and the culture at large. Trauma and Recovery brings a new level of understanding to a set of problems usually considered individually. Herman draws on her own cutting-edge research on domestic violence, as well as on a vast literature of combat veterans and victims of political terror, to show the parallels between private terrors such as rape and public traumas such as terrorism. The book puts individual experience in a broader political frame, arguing that psychological trauma can be understood only in a social context. Meticulously documented and frequently using the victims own words as well as those from classic literary works and prison diaries, Trauma and Recovery is a powerful work that will continue to profoundly impact our thinking.

5 out of 5 stars helps understand the mechanisms of trauma   September 13, 2009
happyday (Mass, USA)
This book was the most detailed book I've ever seen on trauma. I had spent 20 years in cults and have been affected from various forms of abuse and manipulation. It doesn't matter what form the trauma took. In my case I had complex PTSD, but this is a great book that describes the things necessary for recovery. For my case, since I had a few addictions, I had found a "safe" group as described in the book, then I could work through my trauma. In my case the "safe" place for me was a large "SLAA" meeting with both men and women. This book is very helpful and detailed.

2 out of 5 stars trauma and recovery   August 26, 2009

I am not sure if I missed the point here. This book was recommended by a Psychiatrist to help me understand P.T.S.D. I really did not learn anything I did not know.

5 out of 5 stars Top shelf status; not a "how to"   August 25, 2009
bhemscott (Trumbull, Connecticut)
One of the largest areas in a bookstore is the self help area. This book is not a simple afternoon "read/cured" book. That said, this is a book that as you read it you begin to get the sense that it is not only significant, but indispensable to the discourse of trauma issues that the country has finally awakened to. If there is a feminine bias? to this work its like complaining about cover art on a given book; rather, the author should be revered for her insight (and unfortunately, foresight)into an invisible and toxic shock to the human system. It is a push back to the typical mindset of many of the deniers of psychological injury-no foot falling off? then its "in your mind" get over it.

Sadly, if there has been one benefit to come out of a war with percussion bombs, women on the front lines (yes, their "trauma" helped the unsaid to be "said")and sheer number of "freeloaders and neer de wells" coming out of the war then that's the legacy of America's finally waking up to trauma as a serious and potentially chronic condition. America can no longer look away; fortunately there is movement for treatment and followup.

This book is the cornerstone, the road map to, as its' title pronounces Trauma and Recovery. I would have the book on my shelf if for no other reason than to acknowledge the author for being there as a (contemporary)"first." Obviously, this book covers known ground and the author does not "reinvent the wheel" but this is a seminal work in this area.

More than anything else I can communicate about the book is that it opened the eyes of a number of clients to the critical needs of their family members (not a "how to" as I've stated)and for that the author has my unending support and admiration.
