Read the Table of Contents only July 13, 2010 Frederico Lopes (Brazil) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a good book for the starter writer. He will find good advice here, but he needs to be on a path of daily practice to fully understand what those advices mean.
For intermediate level writers and up, the Table of Contents is enough. It reminds you of the tools of the trade, and then you can pass along and finally stick to what matters: be prepared to write, write, and think about your writing.
The Biggest Little Book on Writing I've Ever Read June 21, 2010 Jim Gilliam (Warwick, New York) Before, during, and after writing and publishing my first novel I purchased over fifty books on how to write. I'm always looking for ways to improve my writing skills and during a recent visit to my local bookstore Provost's big little book caught my eye. Big in the sense that it contains a huge amount of information and little in that it does it in only 158 pages. I'm not saying that if I had seen Gary Provost's book first I wouldn't have purchased the others, but I probably wouldn't have felt the need to buy quite so many in-as-much-as Provost has skillfully condensed all of those books into a bare bones delightfully readble tool that I intend to refer to frequently as I write the sequel to my first novel. Provost has touched on the major writing problems that most, if not all, writers face sooner or later--I know I certainly have. I'm glad I discovered this book; it is already dog earred and showing other signs of wear and tear after only three readings. In any event it is a valuable and welcome edition to my writer's library.

A Lunch-Break Helper November 8, 2009 Val J. (Minnesota) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
"101 habits..." by McAleer is a more foundational resource and a good alternative for people at this earlier level. Just paging through on the shelf it is apparent that this book has limited concrete application regarding mechanics (on that subject "Self Editing for Fiction Writers" or "Write Tight" are far better and probably give 100 total tips or more apiece). Even those examples contained in this pocket-sized guide that are memorable aren't high quality. At its worst moments, it's a vapid textbook. Some of the funny examples cited in other reviews are memorable.
But, I've read start to finish three times and each time walked away unsatisfied and frustrated. There are much better (I mean as far as objective quality/experience level of the authors) and more highly-rated guides. I strongly suggest physically paging through before purchasing or reading the reviews of alternatives first.
Pretty useless October 3, 2009 Atle Rønning (Oslo, Norway) 2 out of 14 found this review helpful
I bought this book based on the reviews here and I was quite dissapointed. Spend your money on something else. This one is quite useless and insignicant.
