Product Description An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love--and face the hardest decision of his life.

Dear John.. A review. November 21, 2009 E. Wintercorn Good book. A typical Nicholas Sparks novel with twists and turns. A heart-wrenching ending that makes you want to slap the hero on the back for a job well done and yet hug him for the heartbreak all the more. A must read! Dear John

Heartfelt But Lacking November 10, 2009 C. M. Meza (Anaheim, California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Two young people meet - fall in - retain their relationship from overseas - reunite - and finally go their separate ways.
John Tyree and Savannah Lynn Curtis meet on the beach when he's on leave from the marines and fall madly in love. He returns to his post but they write to each other, waiting til his time in the army is up and they can be together. Then Sept 11 happens and John re-inlists in the army. The separation proves too much for Savannah.
Having read the Notebook and A Walk To Remember I was more than eager to engage in reading Dear John, especially in light of its upcoming movie. Reading the book like all of Sparks works was engaging and left you satisfied that the details and emotions were all cataloged and explained. I thought the book was a very good read if your looking for a heartfelt tragedy. The problem that I have with the book is the same problem I suffer for all of his works - the tragedy. It could be argued that all his books have some sort of happy ending but in Dear John I just couldn't find it. Worst of all the "tragedy" was inflicted by one of the main characters. Death didn't tear apart their love - it was her informing him by letter that she was going to marry someone else. Years later when they meet they are still in love as ever but she's married and both are far to morale to act on it. The book leaves you wanting for their love to continue- to find them together, instead they go their separate ways. Sparks manages very well to describe the depth of true love and how you want what's best for the other person and John's character displays that to perfection. Its in the female lead that I find it lacking. Her innability to wait for him to return from the war.
I was going through so many differnt emotions after I was finished! November 4, 2009 Gina Bennett I like reading Nicholas Sparks books. I couldnt put down this book I was really enjoying it. When I finished it I had so many different emotions. It makes you think about the characters for awhile after you finish reading it.I just wished that there was more happiness in Johns life. It was upsetting that he didnt have anybody..
Liked what I read October 26, 2009 Nina Garcia I am not a a romance reader. I have never liked the plots or stories of romance novels. I got this book b/c I saw a preview of the movie on the internet. I liked his past movies but never really read the books, even though people kept telling me i should. I wanted to start with something different from him and I figured I start with this one. I really enjoyed this book. I realized at times I was mad at Savannah for her personality but then again I guess I know what it is like to have to deal with someone who is far away. Being a military child I have seen so many couples go through all kinds of stuff. My mother is a lifer and my father had retired both from the army. So I have seen my parents leave at times and sit there and wonder when they will come back. Or when they are home dreading the phone call that will send them aaway. It takes a strong person to be able to wait for that person to come home. Some people don't have it in them. None the less, it was a moving story and I cried at the saddness of it and at the joy of the understanding that John learned, not only about his father but from his life in the military and in love. I guess I kind of filled in the gaps b/c I remember what it was like to see people you love and care about leave for long periods of time and watching and helping the ones that are left behind.
