5 out of 5 stars A Good Book, BUT!   November 21, 2009
Gerard F. Zemek (Parma, Ohio)
This book is Grisham doing what he does best--telling a story about a lawyer who has an incident in his past and unsavory people who try to use that against him to get trade secrets. The writing is superb and the story moves along very well. It gets off to a great start and pulled me in right away. The ending though left me at loose ends. I didn't like it but when you read it, you can form your own opinion. Other than the ending, it's very good!

1 out of 5 stars Feh!   November 17, 2009

If you bought this at a thrift-store for 50 cents, you were overcharged 49 cents. An utterly disgraceful abuse of Grisham's readers. Other reviewers here have said they will not give away the ending. I don't think that's because they're frightened of spoiling it, more that there ISN'T one to give away!

4 out of 5 stars Far-Fetched But Entertaining   November 17, 2009

The Associate by John Grisham is definitely a page-turner that kept my interest all through but was a bit of a let down in the end. Kyle, a first-year associate at a big New York law firm was being blackmailed to steal confidential information from the firm he worked for and struggled to find a way out. It demonstrates how one's past can come back to haunt them. I enjoyed this book even though the story line seemed far-fetched to me and there were several loose ends. I recommend this to anyone who likes some suspense and enjoys reading about lawyers. Since I work for a law firm, perhaps that's why I could relate to the main character and got into this book. I found it to be entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Unrealized Potential   November 17, 2009
Duane E. Bolin (Santa Claus, IN United States)
This book started out with a solid premise and had me reading along comfortably until I was about 3/4 of the way through and realized that there was no way it was going to be wrapped up satisfactorily in the scant pages remaining. There were so many angles here that could've made for edge-of-your-seat excitement. The potential for spy hijinks and a thrilling chase through Manhattan kept me reading, but the ending--one of the most abrupt and disappointing of any book I can remember--left me extremely disappointed. And from someone who worked as an associate at one of those huge firms in NYC straight out of law school, I can tell you that the details of the protagonist's work life were overwrought and not all that true to life.

1 out of 5 stars I Agree...Very Disappointing   November 17, 2009

It's been said before on this review page and I'm adding my voice to the crowd: this book is a major disappointment.
The ending is a complete wash-out.
I patiently and carefully read through 294 pages so that I wouldn't miss any clues as to how this sometimes grindingly dry book might end...sure that the finale would be worth the effort. It definitely was not.
The only thing that could possibly salvage this albatross would be for Mr. Grisham to write a sequel and satisfy his readers as to whom Kyle McAvoy was indeed dealing with and what the final outcome was to his stressful adventure.

Mr. Grisham...are you listening?
