Product Description
A practical four-step cognitive therapy program for overcoming self-doubt and fear-from leading experts in the field.

Long-time associates of the Beck Institute, Drs. Sokol and Fox share their practical, four-step cognitive therapy program for overcoming self-doubt and fear, building confidence, and maximizing potential in all areas of life. Their unique program enables the reader to identify and examine those areas where self-doubt gets triggered and interferes with their potential. As the self-doubt becomes more externalized, readers are shown step-by-step how to determine if their fear is valid, and if not, how to overcome it. Readers will learn how to develop confidence and to base their actions on a new, more positive belief structure, resulting in a true and lasting form of solid self-esteem and confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Think Confident, Be Confident   November 24, 2009

Think Confident, Be Confident - is a skillfully crafted book written in a plain non-technical style which any reader can understand. Doctors Sokol and Fox show the readers how their own unique mental and behavioral responses to situations over time can create misperceptions of doubt with regard to an individual's competence and desirability. By employing cognitive therapy techniques, they show how it is possible to replace feelings and thoughts of doubt with more positive feelings and thoughts based upon empirically gathered information and reinforcement. I personally found this book very insightful. I was surprised to find myself so clearly defined in its chapters. I have noticed many changes in how I view the world and myself since putting it into practice.

I thought I was alone with my problems. When I tried to engage others in conversation, I always held back because I was afraid that whatever I said would be ignored or ridiculed. After reading this book and trying out some of the exercises in it, I discovered that others felt the same way I did and were actually happy to be approached and engaged. I am not completely self-satisfied, but I am a lot happier and more confident than I was.

This was very easy to read and had activities to do with each chapter. It was set up in four steps:

* Label It--give doubt a name
* Question It--recognize doubt
* Rethink It--rewrite your rules
* Take Action--expand and maintain your confidence

While this book was relatively short, actually getting rid of doubt would be a lifelong process. What took years to develop in your life, is going to take years to get rid of, in my opinion. So far, I haven't accomplished much with this book. It is easy to forget about the concepts when you have spent your whole life living that way. Like any other self-help book, if you don't practice what it tells you to do, you won't accomplish anything.

I watched Dr. Marci Fox on TV down in Florida while I was on vacation and I really felt like she was talking to me so I quickly purchased the book. Let's face it, life is tough and sometimes it feels like things are getting tougher. It is so nice to know these coping mechanisms. Great book! It was a quick read with lots of tools and stories. Thanks Dr. Marci

4 out of 5 stars A simple, helpful book on the use of cognitive strategies to challenge self-doubt and increase self-confidence   October 19, 2009

Overall, this is a useful little book. The authors, Doctors Leslie Sokol and Marci Fox, are both long-time associates of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research. In Think Confident, Be Confident, Drs. Sokol and Fox utilize the principles of cognitive therapy to target self-doubt and the detrimental effects that it can have on one's moods, actions, motivation, and ultimately, self-confidence. They do this by utilizing a 4-step approach to conquering doubt (Label It, Question It, Rethink It, and Take Action).

Although the ideas offered here are clearly not new, the authors present their information in a manner that is extremely accessible to the average reader and that is also appropriate to a self-help format. Regarding the latter, this book is likely to appeal to readers of that genre, particularly given that is fairly short, uses simple language, and contains helpful exercises. As a psychologist myself, I believe that challenging negative thinking patterns is an effective strategy for many types of concerns, and thus much of my own work utilizes a cognitive approach. Given this, I would recommend Think Confident, Be Confident to readers who are motivated to work on addressing their dysfunctional thinking patterns on their own.
