I loved this book November 6, 2009 J. Macgillivray (Moncton, NB, Canada) Charming and funny, with a lot of interesting information about the occupation of Guernsey by the Germans during WWII. It even has a happy ending.
I hadn't planned on reading this book, so it was a really great surprise.
Loved it November 6, 2009 Melissa S. Crandall (Los Angeles, CA) This book is so enjoyable that I just finished it and have started it ALL OVER AGAIN! That is an absolute FIRST!!!
Contrived November 6, 2009 K. Hoffman First let me say that I didn't even finish the book. I read a little over 100 pages and called it quits. My impression of the book is that the author was fascinated by the German occupation of Guernsey, researched it well, and thought hard about how to present her research to the general reading public. I think she chose a poor method to achieve this latter goal. The writing is very witty at times, but wit alone cannot carry a book successfully to conclusion. It felt like she had a checklist of the historical research she wanted to convey and that with each successive letter she checked her outline to see what information she wanted to tell us next and then did so through a letter, whether it fit into what little of a plot existed or not. It became terribly tedious and nothing compelled me to continue reading.
Book Club Suggested Reading November 5, 2009 Carol A. Mangual (Ewing, NJ United States) I really enjoyed this book. It took some getting used to reading "letters" as opposed to regular written "novel" type context. A must read for any book club or avid single reader.
My Book Club Loved This Book November 5, 2009 Robert & Barbara Jobin (Lafayette, CO USA) This book was loved by our entire book club! The characters were adorable and there was such a sense of community among them.
