Amazon.com Review Outrageously sassy Junie B. Jones will make young kids crave their daily dose of reading. And with this handy four-volume boxed set, whether they start with Junie B. Jones and Some Sneaky Peeky Spying or Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth, readers will laugh out loud at Junie B.'s hilarious mishaps and breathtakingly horrible grammar. Although the books should come with a caveat--Kids, don't try this syntax at home!--alert parents and teachers can use her malapropisms as learning opportunities for their impressionable charges. The set contains the first four titles in Barbara Park's extensive series (energetically illustrated by Denise Brunkus), including Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business and Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus. All are great for reading aloud. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Terrible model for language and behavior November 10, 2009 Marge Simpson I don't like these books and I think it's ridiculous to compare them to the Ramona Quimby books. First, the writing is terrible. It's supposedly written the way a first-grader would talk, but she almost always uses incorrect grammar and has cutsie ways of saying everything, which gets really old. Although I've been in close contact with hundreds of them, I have never heard a single first-grader speak like this, even when telling a story that they're excited about (and Junie is ALWAYS excited about everything!)
Here's an example of the annoying use of language that is used over and over and over. Page after page after page! I found these by opening to two random pages in "Boo and I mean it":
"I pulled Mother there in a jiffy. Only too bad for me. 'Cause as soon as I saw the store, I screeched on my brakes speedy quick. On account of the stuff in the window gave me the creeps, I tell you!... I closed my eyes real tight. And I did a hard swallow...My heart got poundy and thumpy at those words...And wowie wow wow! My eyes popped right out of my head! 'Cause I looked like Squirty, I tell you! I did a loud gasp at that sight."
I find Junie B. rude and obnoxious. She is constantly overexcited about things, whines to get her way, yells and hollers in class, and is just plain rude. When Ramona throws a tantrum, she gets in trouble. When Junie B. does, some adult rolls their eyes. With so many other books to choose from, I'd give these a miss.
Horrible for impressionable kids November 9, 2009 michelle (Middletown, NY) My daughter recieved a bunch of these books for Christmas. While *I* personally get a kick out of them, my daughter has resorted to bad language and wanting to stuff babies into closets (among other things) because that is what this character does. She shrieks out in class, speaks disrespectfully to adults, and makes decisions that are downright dangerous (hiding on a schoolbus during a class trip, eating garbage off the ground, ect). I can go on and on. While I understand that it is my responsibility to teach my child right from wrong, these books work in the opposite direction. I am tempted to throw this trash into the nearest fire pit.
Do you want your child to love reading????? November 6, 2009 A. Triplett (Southern Illinois USA) Okay, as a college-educated professional with two third-graders at home, I must say I am a big Junie B. fan. For those of you complaining of bad grammar and immaturity, DO YOU REALLY have children? My two kids want entertainment, and these books provide just that. Go for it, you won't be sorry. You'll be reading them when the kids get on the bus!
Should be 0 stars October 27, 2009 gwilli My pre-schooler desperately wanted Junie B Jones books because her school has them. I had never heard of them but saw them in my second graders Scholastics Book order so thought they must be good enough. How wrong I was! I cannot believe anything related to educating children (e.g. Scholastics!) could in good faith sell these books. My 4 1/2 year old can't read yet but does have some grammar "quirks" that we are trying to correct. Well, after reading just one chapter of one book I know where she gets it. She talks just like Junie B. Jones. How can you sell these to kids learning to read. Its cute when a 3 year old talks this way. When you are learning to read you expect you are learning to read properly, so how do you do that with these books. Maybe they are okay for older readers who actually already know how to read and know that what they are reading is not proper but do not try to promote these for beginner readers. Now that I have them and know my daugher will not let me throw them away I am grateful that she CAN'T read so that I can correct them as I read them.
Junie B. jones is awesome September 24, 2009 Warren TB (AZ, USA) My girls just love the books and all the things Junie B gets up to. I love how they can relate to what she experiences and understand the lessons learned. Great stories! We read every night for 30 minutes. Fun!
