Amazon.com Review Hobbits and wizards and Sauron--oh, my! Mild-mannered Oxford scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had little inkling when he published The Hobbit; Or, There and Back Again in 1937 that, once hobbits were unleashed upon the world, there would be no turning back. Hobbits are, of course, small, furry creatures who love nothing better than a leisurely life quite free from adventure. But in that first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo and their elfish friends get swept up into a mighty conflict with the dragon Smaug, the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The four books' characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in The Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. Tolkien. But even if we had never gotten Robert Jordan's The Path of Daggers and the whole fantasy genre Tolkien inadvertently created by bringing the hobbits so richly to life, Tolkien's epic about the Ring would have left our world enhanced by enchantment. --Tim Appelo

The Summit of Fantasy November 18, 2009 Scynick (St. Louis, Mo) The Lord of the Rings (including The Hobbit) is a work that has been discussed endlessly, and reviewed so many times that my two cent's worth is utterly unnecessary. Nonetheless, I have two cent's worth to contribute. I will keep it short and straightforward.
If you are a reader of fantasy and have not read this work, well, then, everything else that you have read, however fine, however magnificently done, is in fact a lesser work.
A "Must-Read"...? November 7, 2009 Poniplaizy (Mount Joy, PA USA) Every time an edition *Lord of the Rings* comes out, everyone goes into a frenzy of adoration, marveling at how stunningly written and riveting the books are. When I was in Junior High the trilogy was reprinted to the ecstatic swoonings of reviewers and readers. So I borrowed *The Fellowship of the Ring* and...made it to page 50 before sheer boredom conked me out.
Fast forward 35 years. Everyone is goo-goo-ga-ga over LOTR again--heck, they even made movies of it!--so I thought, with the benefit of age and experience, plus an enjoyment of fastasy novels, I should try Tolkien again.
Long story short: I was just as bored this time. I powered through 398 pages in a span of 5 weeks, sometimes only making it through a paragraph at a time. At that point I realized that at my age it isn't worth spending the time reading something you don't enjoy, no matter how highly touted it is.
The characters had no depth or quirks that made them seem real; the story plodded along, with all ends neatly tied up and none of the gray areas or tension that real life has. The only enchantment I found was matching the characters' names with their possible function as prescription drugs ("If you have high blood pressure, talk to your doctor about Elendil!"). In sum, I felt the books were really meant for children/young adults, correspondingly leaving out the very things (complexity, ambiguity, characters' interior lives) that would attract adult readers.
Although LOTR fans will pee their pants with rage at this suggestion, I think possibly LOTR would be more entertaining if it could come out in a condensed single book, leaving out the parts that are repetitive and don't advance the plot. Until then, it's a must-read...in the same sense as you "must" trim your toenails every week and clean your oven regularly. Sorry Tolkien fans, it's just not everyone's cup of tea!
Hobbit & LOTR Trilogy September 20, 2009 Katrina R. Beeston (Px, Az, USA) The books were in average condition. They had no markings, no dog-eared pages, or other defacements excepting the broken spines, which were anticipated. They were advertised as having a box for storage as well, however, the box had to be cut to lay flat for shipping, and was unable to be adequately restored. Nevertheless, even without the use of the box, the price for the set of 4 books was still outstanding! The shipping cost was reasonable and customary; the speed of shipping was average. It was not as rapid as I had hoped, taking about 12 days until receipt; however, it was within the delivery window that I had been given. Overall, my experience was the the product was average, with average shipping times and costs, but had a GREAT price, despite the box being unusable.
happy camper August 29, 2009 Jonathan Macey The boxed set I ordered arrived in a timely fashion in mint condition. What more could a customer ask?
J.R.R Tolkien boxed set August 10, 2009 K. Magrath (Sydney, Australia) Good value boxed set.Item received did not exactly match set pictured though-item pictured looked like covers had actual movie photographs but set received had artistic drawings on covers. Not a big deal but this could disappoint some.My son will enjoy them regardless.
