Very difficult to read... September 18, 2009 K. Tao I am currently taking a Research in Nursing course using the fifth edition of this book. I have had over seventeen years experience at reading technical papers and research and never have I had such a hard time reading anything. The author writes using a lot of technical terminology combined with a very high level of writing (i.e. big words) without prior definition of the terminology and poor hierarchical organization of information.
Here is an example, "Midrange theory is a focused conceptual structure that synthesizes practice-research into ideas central to the discipline."
Why not just say, "A simple way to define midrange theory is to consider them as theories that are not as difficult to apply to real life as grand theories, but not as hypothetical as the day to day hypothesis of every day nursing practice."
The charts and illustrations are not much better and do little to summarize the main points of what is written.

Ordered product, never received or had any reply when contacted. Had to make alternative arrangements in order to have the book in time for the class I am taking.
Well... I liked it January 16, 2008 N. Celmins (Albuquerque or Alpine) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am also in the online RN-BSN program at UNM. I took the course that used this book the summer of 2007. I really liked the book. I understood more about statistics after reading the chapter in LoBiondo-Wood & Haber than after completing a semester of regular statistics. I wish I'd read that chapter first!
I feel that the book was very thorough, excellent at defining terms and really thoughtful in the way the authors work very hard to describe and differentiate the many concepts that were addressed.
This is what I am getting a BSN for. As a diploma grad and CCRN for 25 years, I am pretty confidant at the bedside. But now that I've taken this nursing research class, and learned to interpret and evaluate what's in the literature, well, it has really empowered me.
The only thing I would suggest to purchasers of this book it to put "LoBiondo-Wood & Haber" into your autotext ASAP, because you will really get tired of typing it out!

This book was excellent for my class. I liked the appendices (nsg research articles) which helped to understand the different concepts related to nursing research.
very difficult textbook to understand April 10, 2007 M. Lenz (Kansas, USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My teacher thinks this is the end-all-be-all of Nursing Research books, probably becuase her Ph.D. mentor is a contributor. I agree with other reviewers that the authors write in very circular terms and in terms that a novice at research (which this book is supposed to be for) cannot understand easily. I am normally a good student, and even if I have a bad teacher I can usually figure it out by reading the textbook but not this time. I am at a loss of where to go to figure this material out.
