Product Description
April 2009 is the one-hundredth anniversary of perhaps the greatest controversy in the history of exploration. Did U.S. Naval Commander Robert Peary and his team dogsled to the North Pole in thirty-seven days in 1909? Or, as has been challenged, was this speed impossible, and was he a cheat? In 2005, polar explorer Tom Avery and his team set out to recreate this 100-year-old journey, using the same equipment as Peary, to prove that Peary had indeed done what he had claimed and discovered the North Pole.

Navigating treacherous pressure ridges, deadly channels of open water, bitterly cold temperatures, and traveling in a similar style to Peary’s with dog teams and replica wooden sledges bound together with cord, Avery tells the story of how his team covered 413 nautical miles to the North Pole in thirty-six days and twenty-two hours—some four hours faster than Peary. Weaving fascinating polar exploration history with thrilling extreme adventure, this is Avery’s story of how he and his team nearly gave their lives proving Peary told the truth.

2 out of 5 stars Rich Dude springs for road trip   October 3, 2009

WEll as books go this was so so. The writing about Perry was interesting but basically you have a couple of guys who get rich people to pay them for travelling around doing things that had importance a hundred years ago Also I love the lecture on Global warming. OK so they just laid down a carbon footprint the size of 250,000 people - two airplane trips to Baffin and seperate plane flights into restock them 4 or so times - hmm lets see they burnt up enough hydrocarbons for 100 lifetimes but they are going to tell us about global wamring - done like true liberals - its OK for me to use fuel but you shouldnt. Yea Right !

....and then we have "Sir Wally" Come on folks are we serious ??? Do people actually go around calling themselves 'sir' wally or Lord Wally. Then we have the RGS Royal Geographic Service - now this society may have made sense a hundred years ago but today?? !! NOt when you can fly into any place you want on the earth in less than a day - so instead we will handicap ourselves Lets see I will be the first person to walk across antarctica backwards with a mirror - yea thats a great idea!

... fumbling around looking to repeat 100 year old challenges - well hey if someone is dumb enough to pay you to do it go ahead!!

5 out of 5 stars Great combination of adventure and history   July 14, 2009

If you are a fan of adventure and history you will love this book. The book chronicles the current day adventure of a dog sledding expedition to the North Pole and uses the 1909 expedition by Peary and Henson to travel back in time and review the history of polar exploration. I enjoyed every page of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Avery and Robert Peary   April 19, 2009

This book is a riveting account of Tom Avery's recreation of the north pole trip of Robert Peary and Matthew Henson in 1909. It vividly recounts the challenges that faced the Naval Commander and his crew of Matthew Henson and several Inuit companions. The book is written from the personal records of Mr. Avery and includes a well researched background of polar history. For those of us who love adventure and the outdoors I would recommend it without reservation.
