Much more than a superficial diet book March 20, 2010 Tibbot (USA) I wanted to learn more about metabolism and weight control. I learned about the author from one of her workouts DVD's and I wanted to compare her book to others I've read about the topic. This book has been a very good surprise for me, because although It is not an academic text, She tells me what I needed to know about metabolism in a way that I can easily understand. I think the book is in a good level which is not too academic, not too superficial.
But what I liked most was the pace I could read it, I felt like I was talking to my best friend with similar experiences trying to stay in shape by working out, but unfortunately and unconsciously with bad eating habits. I liked the direct style, and how trough sharing her own experiences brings you to the important, that you have to change your habits even if you are thinking you are doing the right thing.
I think that anyone willing to learn more can search for more fundamental information to support the book, but I think the value of the book comes from a different source, the doing, if you take the decision to change your habits. Personally I think has been worthwhile, because I didn't need to lose too much weight, but the inches I've lost around my belly, and the change of my energy levels have been excelent, because I don't need coffee anymore.
Absolute Eye-Opener, and, Has Delivered Results March 19, 2010 A. Brobst (Bellevue, WA, USA) I was on the fence on whether or not to buy this book based on the reviews. But, I am so glad I did!
For context, I am a 6' tall female, 33, and very active. I run half marathons, I weight train, and I thought I was very conscientious about my diet. I couldn't figure out why no matter how long or hard I worked out, I could not seem to make my weight go down. My weight spiked easily for no apparent reason at all. Calories in/calories out wasn't cutting it. Based on the amount I worked out, I should have been a stick figure, but I couldn't seem to go below about 173 lbs. I was not overweight by charts and BMI, but I was not happy with my body and it didn't reflect the amount of work I put into it physically.
So, I took a leap on this book, along with two others (Core Performance for Women and another), and I have been most drawn to the ideas in Master Your Metabolism (though Core Performance is pretty similar in its approach to eating). The concepts presented in the book are pretty drastic, so you have to be willing to embrace them, but when you really think about it, they all make sense. There is no way a person in today's society could do all of the items Jillian outlines. But, think of it more as a lifestyle shift, do what you can, and stick to the core principles, and it will work.
By eating natural, whole foods (organic when reasonable and possible), and pretty much eliminating processed foods, I have seen results. This motto from Jillian has really stuck with me: If it didn't come from the Earth or have a mother, don't eat it. Pretty simple, really. I didn't follow the recipe/diet plan provided, I just took the principles outlined and applied them in a way I knew I could maintain. I have continued to use the Lose It app on the iPhone to track my nutrition, and have noticed a major shift in the amount of food I eat on about 2,000 calories a day. I am never hungry, and have stopped craving sweets altogether. Also, whereas sodium used to be a huge issue to try to control - I have been able to keep within the RDA easily on this plan. The pounds have melted off, my abs have re-appeared, and my skin and hair looks so much healthier. I honestly have to double-take some mornings on the scale -- I keep expecting it to do some random weird spike like I used to see, but that is a thing of the past.
If you have hit a weight loss plateau, if you want to feel better about yourself, or you just want to be heatlhier, I would recommend this book. It is a winner!
life changer!!! March 16, 2010 N. Passafiume-Varra (Cincinnati, OH) Ok ladies....listen up!! I have read every book on nutrition, dieting, exercise etc...tried every diet plan.....(lost and gained plenty of weight)
BUT BY FAR....the best approach to total health, including weight loss is Jillian Michael's new book "MASTER YOUR METABOLISM"
It was written with the help of endocrinologists. No food groups are eliminated. The info in this book will scare the crap out of you when you realize what some of the trash you put in your body is doing to you....including....aging you, giving you bad skin, making u and your kids chunky monkeys...and worst of all cancer, diabetes and other diseases.
Please please check this book out!! Read it and then contact me to discuss.
The info in this book will change your ENTIRE life.....it has mine....I feel more incredible than I have in years, my skin looks like it did 10 years ago and I have already lost 5 lbs.(this is all in 2 weeks!)
I LOVE WHOLE FOODS MARKET :)
Amazing Information March 12, 2010 Lillian Quam (AAFB, MD) I am in the medical field, and we studied nutrition, but not to the depths that are covered in this book. Most importantly, the information is supported by several published medical studies and research, which I rely on in real life. The information will change the way you eat for the better, thus improving overall health. I highly recommend this book for EVERYONE!
Tons of information! March 2, 2010 TD (Hood River, Or United States) I have so many earmarks in this book it's crazy. So much information that it takes a few times to read. Very impressed on her knowledge - and is responsible in making it clear we need to see our Dr. to get our hormones and cortisol levels checked out. It's scary what is going on with our food. The government isn't going to fix our problems, we are. They are going to make themselves and the medical industry richer by making us sicker - Getting healthy costs less then going on medication. This book has enlightened me and changed my life.
